I have been playing the game for about a week now and have spent a lot of time trolling the forums and closely examining the star map. One of the things I am curious to know is why the Jita system is the giant trade hub that it is. Was it purpose built for that? Located near profitable space?
It does seem to have a lot of orbital bodies...
If anyone could enlighten me and satisfy my curiosity, I'd appreciate it!

Edited by: Taedrin on 20/04/2010 17:52:27 The only reason why Jita is the main hub in EVE today is because it was the main hub in EVE yesterday.
Back in the day, there were these things called "highways", which allowed rapid transit between the capital systems. At the center of this highway was a system called "Yulai". Yulai was the first super hub. Eventually, CCP tore down the highway, and this "killed" Yulai. However, a new super hub appeared at Jita 4-4. IIRC, originally Jita 4-4 had a level 4 "kill" agent in it, which made it a popular area for mission runners. One of the things that you should notice when manufacturing or trading, is that a small market hub appears where ever there are a lot of mission runners. On top of this, Jita is conveniently located in a somewhat central location making it the ideal place to stop for a shopping trip.
Thus Jita has grown to become the monster that it is today. CCP has since removed the agents in Jita 4-4, so it is no longer a mission hub. However, Jita continues to be the most popular market hub simply because it was already the most popular market hub, and that will not change unless CCP decides to "kill" it. Even if CCP kills Jita, a new Jita will appear somewhere else, just as Jita rose from the ashes of Yulai. ----------

Thanks for the info Taedrin. I'm always curious as to how these things get built up in the first place.

Have a read of the Quarterly Economic Newsletter (click on the Q4 2009 edition).
Start reading on page 28. This is the best description I've found of how Jita came to be and why it persists. (not that there's anything wrong with the description given above, but this is a lot more comprehensive) ______________________ Agony Unleashed Home of the PvP University. |

Were the highways torn down to kill Yulai so there'd be less lag?
Or was there some other reason and the end of the Yulai trade hub was the by product?
I know that CCP has had major problems with lag in Jita. I understand it's a lot better now but I believe there's still lag.

Edit: p24, NOT 28 (I'll get this right yet).
Correction: 15/22 seems to be the answer as well :)

"A lot better" is an understatement. Jita used to lag out with a few hundred pilots in local, now it takes what, 1500? People will flock to Jita until it lags. Every single improvement in Jita resulted not in the same amount people with a lot less lag, but with more people with the same amount of lag (well, perhaps slightly less).

Highways were removed to make eve big again. Fast routes to all corners of Eve made it feel very small.
Also worth noting that even though Jita is the biggest, there are other hubs as well. Dodixie for one. Most (all??) hubs are High Security, High Quality Level 4 agent stations and systems. Like has been said, Jita is just more central. ----------------------------------------------- Please resize your signature to the maximum allowed of 400 x 120 pixels with a maximum file size of 24000 bytes. Amarr Emperor Family Academy may be high-sec, but it doesn't have any notable agents. I think it arose in part due to being quite central in the Amarr Empire with good communications to the different Amarr regions, but also due to a kind of subconscious roleplay. The Amarr system is the capital of the Empire, and it simply makes sense to have a hub there. -----

Other reason is that most if not all "public skill books" are sold for "NPC price" either in Amarr or in Sarum prime. Second reason is that Amarr as system is pretty much at the dead center of Amarr empire and domain region, so it has high sec gates to pretty much everywhere in the region and all the shortest routes also map through Amarr.

All the info in this thread is very interesting and there are some things I didn't know about Jita.
However I do wonder though... Why Moon 4 Station 4? Why not another station in system? ________________________

Edited by: Korlissa on 22/04/2010 23:21:40 I'm guessing another reason for Jita becoming more popular than other trade hubs too is simply by being Caldari. From what I understand Caldari ships have always tended to be the general favourites among mission runners and for a long time the Caldari Achura character was considered optimal for their attribute allocation.
I know starting race/location doesn't limit you at all, but it still would have contributed to the Caldari mission hubs being more heavily populated.
Now of course it's a self-perpetuating cycle, as many people choose to mission in Caldari space so they can be close to Jita.

Jita IV - Moon 4 - Caldari Navy Assembly Plant
"Used to be, when the beginning tutorial agent was through with you, he'd refer you to some nearby, random level 1 mission agent. My first toon was refered to the level 1 agent at Jita 4-4. Once there, there were agents level 1-3 all at the one station, and enough missioners and manufacturers there, I could buy and completly outfit ships right there. No reason to even go anywhere else for a while." -- Suz1
