I had hoped to confront a can flipper who comes taunting me in ney, and stealing my can when I have spent an hour filling it. But having gone out with a corp friend, who has lots of skills to dead space to do a test against each other, I was shocked at the difference in damage we were able to do to each other. When I analysed the reasons for it I found that Just to get my drones to deal the same damage as his drones would take a couple of months of training. Then drone interfacing, drone navigation, drone sharpshooting. Another month to match the damage of his vulcan autocannon 2's. Another month to get near his shield skills to try and last a bit longer. So I realised that can flipper was quite safe from my shiny new Myrmidon. Yes I think that it would be possible for a newish character to pvp in a gang. Im an old retired guy and dont like the idea of ambushing salvagers and the like. But I would like to be able to protect myself, or help defend our corp against bandits and pirates. And I see that it is going to take a bit of time. I can live with that. I am going to train cloaky, so that I can try go have a look outside our system, then I will keep my skill queue filled with combat skills.
Thanks for your help.
I think part of your issue is that you are directly comparing yourself to an older character, that and you are basing everything off a larger ship which of course takes longer to get into properly.

1 month alone to get from battlecruiser3 to 5. (which gives you 20% extra damage)
Do not think of it like this, the time to get to rank 4 is much shorter leaving only a 10% difference. Same goes for your mention of things like drone interfacing and the like, worry about getting the skills to 4 first, most skills in this game only go up by ~5% from IV to V. There are of course notable exceptions such as drone interfacing and covert ops, but you can still be competitive. And most definitely, if you are trying to use drones in combat and you do not have even the base skills to III or IV, things will not go to well.
You also mentioned that you trained mining for most of your two months, so am I right to assume that you got yourself into a bigger ship for mining, but if you first aimed at mining I wager you did not put a lot into combat skills. Start getting some of the combat skills to III and IV, do not worry about tech II stuff yet, and learn the basics. Maybe aim for frigate combat if you are a little impatient as the skills are generally quicker (small guns vs. medium, etc.).
PS
Throw on a meta 4 gun, slap in some faction ammo and you can at the very least get close to his damage with tech 2 guns. Again, just get your base skills up, it is very quick to get things to level III or IV.
