Ok, as you know ccp stopped lin support yrs ago blah blah blah and their tutorial is broken. So, since I noticed their tutorial is broken with broken links as well, I thought I'd write one.
1. install the latest version of wine (make sure its 1.1+!). Many distros do not include a 1.1+ version, but you can get it from winehq.org
2. Delete your old wine folder. EVE does not like sharing other application settings. It used to be that those registry changes you had to make to wine to get EVE to run benefited other games, but now those changes crash eve (since Dominion).
rm -rfv ~/.wine does the trick nicely.
3. Download the offline installer in case there are any issues. It can be found here.
4. While that's downloading, run winecfg and set up a few things.
First, make sure windows xp is selected to be emulated. Next, go to sound and make sure the sampling rate is 48000 and full hardware accel is enabled.
5. You do not need to edit your wine registry with the newest wine release, in fact making those changes you used to need crash eve now.
6. Install EVE using wine.
7. Now, for me there was no fonts issue, but if you have an issue reading the EULA, go to here and get the winetricks script. Use the command following to download and install the core fonts:
sh winetricks corefonts
8. Excellent! Now, we need to make one last change before we can play EVE. CCP changed some sound code in Dominion, and now the jukebox actually crashes eve within seconds of loading. So you have two choices.
You can play with audio disabled (all of it!)
OR
You can rename your jukebox folder so the files are not found and it doesn't play the music. This way you can still have EVE voice. The folder is in /home/masternerdguy/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/CCP/EVE/res/audio, renaming it suffices. If you don't, I don't think CCP is actually aware of this, you can't play EVE on linux any more.
9. All effects except shadows work fine. Enable what you want.
10. Getting EVE voice to work is a two step process. First of all, make sure your input device is configured properly (ex. make sure that if your using a USB mic its set to the primary input not your built in mic jack).
Then, you want to go to winecfg sound tab and try ALSA first, and if it doesn't work, try OSS. One of them usually works.
There are no eve voice issues one you get the right input set up.
Thanks for reading!

Hm.
try it linux is lightyears ahead of windows in terms of security, 3d desktop effects, and installation size. A base windows vista install is 7 or 9gb (cant remembeR) but that same disk space is a near total linux distro including office suites and all those goodies.
eve runs better on linux than windows, I have a 40% performance boost and no disconnects.

I don't need security, or 3d desktop effects, or to be stingy with hard disk space. EVE runs fine on windows, along with all the other games I play. Half the programs I use are Windows-only. -

I would've read this post. Except that masternerdguy is the one writing it. Honestly, why CCP lets you out of your cage... Maybe they just do it to torture us?

Me, specifically. Or at least it feels like it sometimes; same with Armoured C. _____________________________________ Haruhiist since December 2008 WIP

Wine Is Not an Emulator
WINE is a compatibility layer. It does not allow you to execute x86 binaries on PPC, ARM, or any other architecture. WINE is simply an implementation of the Windows API (including directx) so that x86 binaries compiled for windows will be able to execute under Linux.

I don't think you've seen Win7 - not that I'm a fan, but the visual effects are quite nice and easily compete with the composite stuff.

Who cares about installation size? Win7 won't run on old hardware anyway and current PCs come with at least 500GB of disk space, most likely even 1TB.
Originally by: masternerdguy eve runs better on linux than windows, I have a 40% performance boost and no disconnects.
Sure, you have shadows disabled... :) A couple of games run faster on wine, but it usually comes at a price.
Btw, I'm posting this from a linux installation I set up on a usb flashdrive so I can use it on whatever computer is available. It's great, but the amount of commandline tuning I had to do is not comparable to anything a windows user has put up with, which is why I can only roll my eyes when I see yet another linux fan trying to convince the windows guys to switch. -

Hey masternerdguy, You should consider putting this on the EVElopedia. It would be a great place to start getting EVE working on Linux.
Also, how well are Direct X and Wine getting along now a days?

Shadows are working for me. Do an orbit and watch the gun turret shadows on your own hull.
It's only ships that cast shadows though. I presume that's the way CCP have coded the client - ie: things like stations/stargates/asteroids/planets don't cast shadows.

Small update: Stations/stargates are casting shadows onto themselves but not onto ships.

DirectX 9 and wine are beautiful, 10 is very iffy. 11 will probably be very iffy as well
Also, how do I put this on evelopedia?

Edited by: Khorkrak on 27/04/2010 00:25:44 I have EVE running based on masternerdguy's instructions on Ubuntu 10.4 LTS and Wine 1.1.43. I had sound working fine aside from eve voice and the jukebox on 9.04 and Wine 1.1.41. Anyway, hopefully eventually sound will work again via a future Ubuntu and / or Wine release.
