Alright, I've been trying my best over the last month or so to get some low-sec fights going, but either I don't see anyone, or when I do I get rocked. I've lost a thorax and later a 'phoon to the same navy omen, I got rocked in my crazy trip-rep myrm by a hic/comand combo... I've tried to up my dps every time I lose and go at it again, but I've got 12 losses and 0 kills in the last week alone...
So, I've decided to go all out. Today I liquidated my crappy collection of cruisers/bcs/other junk and picked up a phantasm off contracts. I've got it fit pretty good with (what I think is) respectable dps AND tank, so I should be good to go. The only thing is, now that I've got it, I'm afraid to head out and use it. The way things are going, I'm bound to get smoked again.
So I'm asking here if anyone wants to help me out and back me up on this ship's maiden voyage. I need to pop her cherry, but not without some... protection.

First of all don't fly a phantasm. It's way too expensive to lose unless you're confident at pvp and have a fair chunk of sp.
Sell it, and buy a bunch of rifters/merlins/tristans/punishers/incursus'/thrashers or even cheaply fit t1 cruisers and learn in those. That way you'll only be taking a small wallet hit if you lose.

Sell it buy frigs, cruisers.
Dont fight with what you cannot afford to lose buddy, if it pvp training/experience you need to start you off, Its alot easier to join a 0.0 corp/allaince and fight there first.
Then end go back to low sec

Fixed your post. Loosing isnt an option, its a way of life. All you have to do is loose less than you win and get lucky from time to time.

Well okay, yeah. When he loses I spose. And that's the other thing about t1 frigs - you only need to win a couple of times to pay for it. Or even make a profit if you get the occasional lucky catch.

Cardinal rule of PVP, DONT FLY WHAT YOU CAN'T AFFORD TO LOSE!
Sounds like you're trying to solo. That's tough. Get in a gang. You will cover more capabilities. Ewar, Damage, Tackle, Scout etc.

this.
solo pvp is for chars with more SP and players that are deep inside of the game mechanic. soloing is (imo) the worst way to learn pvp. go get a gang and have some fun. ------ äDon't tell people how to do things. be aware that engaging in low-sec can get you a sec status hit. Eventually this will mean you cannot go to higher sec systems.
A great place to get an idea of what ships are out there and what they can do is the test server. I dont think its a realistic way of gauging how people fight but it will allow you to see typical fitting and damage/tank for various ship classes. + LDSkill+hireLDS |

Fixed. Only you do it in frigates (Thrasher is also a fun option).
When you get the hang of that, you'll always be better then those failures which couldn't cut it solo and all they ever did was gangs, gangs and blobs as a result. Then they go out solo for a change and lose their expensive failboats in hilarious ways.
I farm those for my ISK.
Also, I would suggest learning how to fit ships properly, so you don't have embarassing losses like losing a Typhoon to a navy omen (heavy neutralizers exist for a reason and they make smaller, particularly cap-using ships very sad).
Also, a phantasm is not a very good ship (particularly for what you're trying to do). Sell it.

Sell the Phantasm, and start learning to pirate in T1 cruisers, frigates, and destroyers. Learn to fit and fly these effectively. Lose a lot of them in the process. Find a corp with some good PVPers. Then, move up to learning assault frigates and battlecruisers. Only when you are truly, supremely confident in your abilities and "pirate sense" and have a sizable amount of ISK to back them up, should you consider solopirating in HACs, recons, faction cruisers, or battleships.
Alternatively, you can ignore this advice, and tell me when and where you're planning on pirating in your new Phantasm next, so that I can come help you.

Privateers are the only true heroes in this game: fighting inflation, one ship at a time.

Echoing the others, soloing in cheap frigs and cruisers is really an excellent way to learn and start pvp. PRAISE THE SCOTTISH FOLD!!

I'm going to jump on the buy-lotsa-frigates bandwagon. Frigates are the best way to learn PVP, for several reasons.
Frigates are unforgiving; If you make a mistake in a frigate, you will die pretty fast. This makes finding what you did wrong and learning from it a lot easier.
Frigates are manouverable; The only thing better at avoiding fights than a frigate is a pod. This means you often get to choose what to fight, instead of being chosen.
Frigates are cheap; A simple fact of PVP is that you will die, and you will do it often. Grabbing another frigate and heading right back out is far better than having to earn a large stack of ISK. It gives you more oppertunities to learn, and more importantly, more oppertunities to have fun.
That last one also makes the barrier for entering hopeless fights lower. Dying in a fire while attempting to take down a battleship in a frigate is hilarious. Dying in a fire in a Phantasm is not. - Paknac Queltel

Don't want to do frigs even though everyone tells you to and they're right?
Use a vexor. Big tank (for a T1 cruiser), fit a mwd, 2 ewar (point/web, point/scram, whatever), 1 medium neut and 4 small guns. At least 1 flight Warrior IIs.
Tank? Check Tracking Issue? Nope Cap Issue? Not bad at all Range Issue? Not really Price? Decent to really cheap (meta 3 plate, no trimarks, cheap-ish neut). ECM resistant? Check
Buy them by the half-dozen. Most frig sized ships and T1 cruisers are fair targets. Rest is situational.

You have all really surprised me with the amount of good advice you've delivered. No sharp tongues, no trolling. Well, I've bought a starter run of 10 rifters and am skilling towards some decent projectile skills as we speak.
Thanks.
Edit: See, I tried to... go "legit" there in the end when it seemed no one would rise to the bait. And now you've ruined it. Thanks Rachel.

Until you are experienced don't engage other pirates. Don't kill stuff that you do not think you can kill. Either be able to run away from the person you engage, or be able to kill them before help arrives. Orr have your own backup.
