So getting bored with a little downtime from PVP so I wanted to look into running plexs. I hate mission running but the idea of at least having a CHANCE at deadspace loot made it interesting. Now my problem:
There is not a lot of information regarding plexes. What information there is seems very outdated. I will post what I THINK I know and you guys let me know what is wrong.
1. Go for signatures, not anomalies 2. Go to low or null sec. Only public DEDs are in high sec.
Now my question is this, I found one in the first low sec system I went to (in my buzzard). I was going to get a drake and run it but there were 20 people in local. How are you guys able to run these without getting probed down and ganked? Should I wait and build out a tengu? Or do you guys just go a bunch of jumps in to lonely low sec and run it there?

Recently I have been exploring lowsec with an Imicus/Vexor combination. I try to work only in deadend, ideally stationless systems. I only feel completely safe when local is totally empty except for me. Anyone who enters the system I look at very carefully, using the directional scanner to check combat probes. If anything seems wrong I immediately warp to a safespot and cloak up. Yes, you do risk losing the site if you warp out.
I have been ganked a few times (despite my caution) and it has always been when I am in mid-combat with a rat, not paying proper attention to the situation, and someone warps in on top of me.

Completely wrong. Hidden 3/10 and 4/10 both spawn in highsec, and on a lucky day either could net you over 100m in loot.

Two options:
1) You don't, go deeper into lowsec and leave the busy border systems behind.
2) Watch directional scanner like a hawk and hope you can blend in with the rest of what's going on in local, this works better in FW areas than it does in "pirate hub" type systems.
And about the Tengu, somebody can still probe down the plex you're in, even if the ship you're in can't. This doesn't apply to expeditions after first stage though, then you're golden.

Are you sure they spawn in High-sec also?
I scanned down 3 signatures last night, all 3 were wormholes. Did 1 in .4 space and it was a plex.

I use a Pilgrim and am seen in a well known really quiet Lo Sec region which also has 2 nice access points into Null Sec.
When other players are within the system just keep an eye out for probes, and if you get ganked just buy another ship :)
I was doing it in a 2 bil Legion but it made me nervous hehe, the Pilgrim is a fine solo exploration vessel as I can fit everything I need.

I scanned down a 3/10 in a 0.5 system a few days ago, but scanned 15-20 systems yesterday 0.8-.5 and saw none.

Yesterday, scanned down about 12 systems, none lower than .5
Found 4 Radar sites or so 2 WHs 2 DEDs (a 3 and a 4)
And several Ladar, Magnometric, cosmic Signatures (Haunted Yard anyone?) and other junk.
Generally, I have found many DED 4s, and only a few 3s. The DED 4s, when faction loot is dropped, have consistantly been Pithum-C passive shield resists. The DED 3, well, I got great loot on the one that did drop a faction item. It was a Serpentis module.
So yes, DED 3 and 4 spawn in hi sec, and yes they are worth the time.

You need to find quieter places to scan.

or busier...the 3/10 I found in the evening in a busy system. Yesterdays several hours spent scanning began just after DT, and was in fairly quiet systems.

I can't stress this enough. For a long while, I was a WH inhabitant. We had a static hi sec exit, so each day, if there were no sites in the WH, I would go probing in whatever hi sec that was.
ON days when we were two or so jumps from Jita or in other crowded regions, i found very little. However, on those days when it was some little hi sec corner, say 25+ jumps from jita, with like 2 in local... on the number of sites I found! Drool! Heck, there was this one time the WH opened into one of those little "islands" of hi sec, where you have maybe 3-5 hi sec systems in a row, but surrounded by at least one low sec system or more between you and normal empire space, those are great locations. Usually no one roams them and there are tons of sites to explore.

Learn to use the scanner, and keep your eye out for probes. Fit a cloak. Try to find a ship that can do everything in one package (probing, combat, hacking, analyzing, and salvaging). Arbitrator, Vexor, Myrmidon, Pilgrim, Ishtar, Dominix, T3s work fine.
Don't be probing in a .4 gateway system or on a busy pipe, there are plenty of out of the way low sec areas to probe in where you will hardly see another soul. Plus there's a much better chance of finding a good untouched sig.
Combat probers in low sec are not as popular as you might think, I've sat in one of the major entrance pipes to Aridia with 10-20 people in system and moving through for hours before and never seen another probe besides mine. As long as you use the scanner and know how to sort your list you're fine. Course this advice goes hand in hand with having a secure safespot and keeping a cloak fitted and online at all times.

For Low Sec ....
If you can run radar and mag sites use a Force Recon ship. It has more than enough tank and gank and slots for the salvagers, anaylizers, codebreakers. For combat sites you may need a DPS ship or better tank (I plexed in low for almost a year, used a Hyperion and a Deimos for tank and gank, respectively)
You will be pleasantly surprised how much a lowsec Radar or Mag site (well the harder to find Mag sites) can net you. For Hi Sec the Guristas 4/10 can drop 400 mil sometimes.
The basics like the last poster ... d-scan for probes, make a SS before running the plex (I personally usually made it on the way in, about 1 mil km from the plex, if I got probed and the prober got close it would really make him mad because he would think I was still at the plex :)) ALWAYS ALWAYS fit a cloak. Only time I ever got ganked was when I fell asleep (serious here too) and some lowsec plexes can drop 500-700 mil.
If you do dual-box, have one char scan at max AU for probes, the other at 6 au (after probes are detected) If the second char pickes up probes, and you are using something bigger than a cruiser hull, GTFO.
Hit me up in game if you wish.

The best time to scan is around 0500-1100 EVE time, because of the way the spawn mechanics work.
