Why wont CCP relent on the policy of not allowing character name changes? Allow us to petion to release names that have ended up with 'abandoned' characters!

For how long a character would have to be logged out of the game before it s name would become eligible for a name release peition? I cant say but to my personal liking I d say maybe 8-12 months.
Also, apparantly there need to be some sort of functionality allowing the owner of the character to be warned of impending character name loss.
Maybe through an email, or eve mails to other charactrers on the same account in which the owner is presented with a link which will let CCP know if the person wants to retain his character name. If no reply is received within another few months, the name will be released and substituted with a generic and the person peitioning for the name release will receive it.
All for a fee of course, just liek with any other character services that are already present, like portrait changes or character transfers.

So there I was, trying to create a new character the other day when the big question came about!!! A name....
I delved deep into my imagination to come up with something truly awesome, that would reflect my character in real life whilst also being original.
I came up with "Luke Skywalker", what an excellent idea. Everybody has seen Star Wars and so when they see me in game they would identify me as a real hero and think "wow, that's an awesome name"
Imagine my disgust when I found that somebody had already taken it! That was MY NAME, I don't believe that anybody else could possibly have thought it up, and I want it back. CCP please rename that guy so I can have his name, thanks

What name are you chasin?
Also.. in EVE the name isn't that important or will make you more feared/loved.. your actions make that happen.
So with this in mind.. grab you some (scifi) book - i.e. Judas unchained, Pandoras Star from Hamilton have plenty of names - and get creative.

I have 5 accounts with 15 characters and every one of them was named on the first try. I didn't even try to be overly creative. So what name is it you are after if you could tell us? It's not like someone is going to make a throwaway alt and take it after all.

Also 8 to 12 months, that't not exactly fair. I know plenty of people who have had to take a break from Eve for over a year due to money, family, being bored of the game, etc and then come back and resumed playing. Hell, you see in hear people who post saying 'back after 2 years, what has changed?'
There are plenty if unused names, just be creative. Just because you cant use 'john' or something doesn't mean you should take that name off someone else just because they happen to stop playing the game or go inactive for awhile.
So what happens if that person misses this email because the junk mail fold eats it or they don't have access to the internet for the couple of weeks grace period but still wants to keep there name?
Also how do you stop this being abused? Example; so I go inactive for X amount of time, you know that I have because you keep either keep track some how or you want to use my name, you take my name. Then use the fact that some people don't always check corp histories every time someone convos them and start speaking to my old friends. You fool them into thinking you are me (don't know how) and scam them for isk/ships/livestock.
Go away and only come back when you want to ask for something that is important to be altered. This isn't an issue, it would do more harm than good, be more creative when you want to think of a name (I have never had any trouble picking using a name that I want to use because I have an imagination) and its totally pointless.

I've admitted to having created, then terminated, numerous characters. Now, my old characters are terminated, deleted, non-existent!
Yet, a few remain in the CCP database. I couldn't use the original 'Orion Core,' my very first character, on account him still existing! Please, CCP, when a character is terminated, terminate them from your database, too.

Sounds like something buggy happened and it didn't get fully terminated then. Petition it and have ccp verify that it was linked to your account and they will probably finish the termination process.

City of Heroes did something cool that I think all other games should do. After a certain amount of inactivity (not logging onto that character) your character name went into "reserved" mode, and if anybody else chose that name for a new character then they would get it and your "reserved" name would be reset; then you were prompted to enter a new name upon your next login.
Every MMO should do this!
edit: and just to remind you, there is still no divider between posts and sigs.

There's certainly an argument for saying that names from trial accounts that never subscribed should be forfeit after, say, 6 months.

they should just delete the characters on trial accounts who have never been changed to a paying account and have been inactive for 6 months.

The biggest problem is that all the trial accounts that have been made and never activated still exist and the characters are still holding the names.
I don't remember CCP publishing how many inactive trials there are compared to other accounts but I can't imagine it being small. Start deleting trial characters over 2 years old - that would be 4 years of characters! - and I bet name availability will be a lot better.

Just pick a last name. A certain other RPG that can't be mentioned but costs money to buy but is free to play requires a last name, so overlap is uncommon unless you stole the character name from relatively popular media. Not only does that game have millions of users that share the same pool of names, but each player claims up to eight names.
In short, unlike me, be original.

I agree with the idea of removing trial accounts/characters that were never subscribed after six months or so. Obviously these people tried Eve and decided against playing. Scrap their accounts.
However, for an account that was subbed, those names should remain taken unless the character in question is biomassed. I mean how would you feel if you went off on, for example, a military deployment somewhere with no PC access for a year, and came back to find all your characters renamed to minmatar citizen 12345 or something.
