no, they are that good. there are TONS of threads about this, if ya bothered to look for them instead of posting a really poorly written comment about something that has been discussed in about 100 different threads

A large mining barge still mines more than the previous miner king, the apoc, so what's the problmem?

Krulla this is not a flame but I am genuinly interested as to your thoughts on this....
As far as I can see Mining barges unless accompanied by pilots who will protect them in anything other than 0.7 and above are running the risk of losing their kit for the sake of mining slightly faster than they would in an Apoc. Try using a barge solo in less than 0.5 and you really are toast quick. Seems like they have encouraged carebear miners and macro miners even more with these ships.
However where they do rule is that they and only they can mine ice. But this thread is about roid mining.
Problem is who wants to sit and protect a mining barge? wouldnt you rather sit in an apoc in 0.2 or o.3 with 8 m2's and get nearly the same amount of ore with only PK's to worry about?

However, try this with a friend/alt. It's what I do with my 2 chars anyway.
Fit a BS for tanking and mining... like, say, a dom with 2 large armour reps, 2 hardners and 6 miners. Warp around, until you find a nice tankable spawn. After all the npcs are shooting at the dom, have the barge(s) warp in... the npcs will keep nibbling away at the dom forever, who keeps tanking them. All the while the barges are sucking rediculus amounts of rock.

Note it mines faster, as it is a ship designed especially to mine. Large cargo hold also gives you the option of forgoing using jettisoned cans, thereby eliminating the threat of ore thieves. Also they're the only way to use Ice Harvester lasers.
You are giving up speed and defense to be the best miner, but the barges do make for a dedicated upgrade path for miner characters to take. I think that Mining Barge 5 is a bit extreme considering it's a rank 4 skill and a standard Tech I ship, though Astro, Industry, Mining etc are fair enough.
One trick I've found, is contrary to popular drone practise. Usually people ensure their ships are targetted first, and then launch drones to eliminate NPCs without threat of losing them. In the barge however, it's actually a very good defense for solo mining...launch one or two fast light scout drones...either the Kinetic, Exp or Em one. They're very small and will draw fire away from you if you have them in space before NPCs arrive. So you can continue mining, while your light drones take all day to get rid of the trouble

It's the way if any I would do that, but i will still stick with the apoc (unless i go safe empire mining). With my main character I do mine in 0.0 but in an apoc. A friend of mine in the mean time has now got thru his third barge while mining not very far from me (within laser range) and also having 2 bs guards. Problem is even the frigates (elite) when they respawn might decide to take a pop at something other than whats chaining them even tho it can be up to 50 km away and several times a second spawn has shown as well.
I just wish the barges were a little tougher or had more middle or low slots which would make them a little more resilliant. Still i am keeping the ice coming in for our new POS

Thats the problem! Don't chain the spawn! Just tank the whole spawn with the bs (mostly apoc or dom)!
For soloing it's only safe in 0.9 and 1.0. Like you sayd, BABY npcs can kill barges easily.

find a spawn of like 3 cruisers and just let them all attack one ship...don't kill them

Or if u LOVE chaining then get the drones to put some Light scouts out of mineing drones so they get the fire first so the barge has time to warp out.

I dont agree that large barges are better miners than apoc's. Im at work at the minute skiving but i did do the calculations a few days ago. My apoc mines 740ish units of ore per minute thats without drones using miner II's only. The large barge mines 530ish units of ore per minute using strip miner I's.
Or have I missed something??

They mine with all 3 skills @ 5, which you need to use that barge, you get 540*1.25(Mining 5)*1.25(Astro 5)*1.15(Barges 5)=970,3125 m3 per 180 second. That divided by 3 for a minute and multiplied by 3 for 3 stripminer you get 970,3125 m3 per minute out of a large mining barge! For Apoc its 750 m3 with 8 Miner II @ level 5 mining skills.
