I think I figured out why we lag when we are trying to play the game with more than 10 people.
This is what all the networking should look like at CCP to keep us all lag free and fix networking problems when they arise:
Now this is what their networking actually looks like and why if there is ever a problem it takes so long to fix:
I am just poking fun at CCP not trying to be an Ahole just having some fun :)

last i checked, eve runs on T1 meta 0 hamsters and this is why there is lag. if they would get at least meta 3 it wouldnt be so bad, or train some skills

Look, lets get serious as it affects a lot of people. I don't ever get lag. Some so called experts may say its because I never do fleet fights but that's just a coincidence. The fact is I pray to the Volcano Gods every day and, as a back up, The Flying Spaghetti Monster. Trust me, it works.

LoL I dont get much lag either but I was talking to a friend in RL who plays the game while we were at a data center and we walked by some of the worst looking server racks ever. I mean just horrible and I dont understand how that thing was still running. We were walking past it and he said "Hey look its CCP's server."

and then he "accidentally" turned if off without telling everyone? sounds KINDA familiar

Yea you know how much havoc getting a server rack turned off causes? We all think its nothing but when you get working with server racks that cost tens of thousands to keep up and running you don't laugh. Yea TBH most of the time when a network goes down it is not because of some crazy error that is impossible to fix. It is because there is a cable unplugged and if your servers look like the bad picture above it'll take hours to fix it.

So what if one cable stopped working and you instantly knew which one you had to replace....
in what datacenter would you rather be working?

Clean, prethought out data centers help with air flow and little else.
Once it's all plugged in and wired up there's little to no reason to go into the room let alone unplug stuff.
My OCD kicks in big time so you should see the beaty that is my patch panels but that's another matter.
The actual problem with lag that people appear to skim over is that most online multiplayer games are what, 16, 32 maybe 64 players on one map at any one time? Even wow limits you to what? 5000 people per server?
Where as eve, you've got thousands of systems shared across multiple nodes and each and every system could erupt into a fight at almost any moment.
When you have even small scale skirmishes it's going to have an impact on sommin, 100 vs 100, what other game gives you that as a small fight?
Think about all the maths flying about there :P
Mmmmm maths Mmmmmmmmmmmmaths Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmaths
he he he
it's annoying and I do think they need to focus on fixing the larger fights but I doubt any of the issues have anything to do with physical layout of cabernets... unless they're using 10/100 switches between the servers and the servers are old precision 420 workstations but I doubt that...
I'm in a padantic mood and I know the OP was doing a funny :) --

9/10 NOC's and server farms look more like the second picture. That first picture is fine if you only have a few server racks to worry about, but try it with a few hundred racks and you'll start to appreciate the benefits of loose cabling. Adding or moving data drops daily on that first setup would be a total nightmare.

^^ Agreed
When cabling is THAT neat, trying to cable trace a cable by hand is near impossible, and they only ever look like that for the first month after deployment! No matter how good your intentions are, all server / patch rooms will eventually look like the second image over time!!

Thirding the above. I kept the cabling in racks I've worked on as tidy as possible, but also free enough to work on, because something inevitably needs to be done. -

Lol, let's use the same color for every cable! Classic newb mistake.
Originally by: Jim Raynor EVE needs danger, EVE needs risks, EVE needs combat, even piracy, without these things, the game stagnates to a trivial game centering around bloating your wallet with no purpose.

Edited by: Mr Kidd on 26/04/2010 11:01:38 That first pic probably ain't even a data center. Probably a back office running permanent drops to front offices. Whereas, the second pic is a data center.
Kills me when people expect cables to be as neat in that first pic. One problem with one cable and it all gets undone. I would expect that picture was taken after a fresh install.
And you don't trace cables by hand. That's what tone generators are for.

I will agree with most of you. The top picture is either in the beginning of a server deployment or some small office server somewhere. But I have to disagree with some comments saying that eventually they will turn into the second picture. Where I was at 90% of the servers looked nice and neat with as little cable all over the place as possible and yea only very few even looked like the first picture. For example the Sun Microsystems server was one of the best looking racks I had ever seen. Everything was well protected, cabling was nice and neat. That said there were at least 10 server cages that looked like the second picture and they scared the crap out of me.
Most of the servers at the data center looked like this:
Very few looked as nice as the first picture.

Yes that first pic looks like a small office server room on the turn over day from the contractor.

Without showing all the hamster wheels, tunnels and feed dispensers you cannot properly show any server room ;) Such as this.... http://www.boingboing.net/images/habicase.jpg
