I cant figure out whats doing this, I have 6 hard drives in my PC, I only keep 3 plugged in at a time though to ease the load off my 420watt powersupply, thing is though for the last 3 months or so, everytime I do anything, my hard drives are all spun up even though they are used for nothing but storage (no programs installed and a simple file structure)
I open winamp - my hard drives all spin up from sleep mode I open google chrome - they all spin up I play a game from steam - they all spin up I open ventrillo or teamspeak - they all bloody spin up I open media player - they all spin up
normally I wouldnt go near these drives unless I wanted to watch a film or install a game from a .iso or listen to some music archived .mp3's on these drives, so the fact they are unnecessarily spun up 20 times a day is really annoying me, anyone know how to keep them spun-down until I specifically need them or know what could be the cause of these constant spin ups? I had an issue months back with windows restore constantly spinning them up at random, since I disabled that its been better and they done spin up on their own, just when I open a program

I found that my windows froze when i used explorer to look at any drive when i had a external usb hard disk that went into sleep mode. It seems there are no windows policies to turn off external usb hard disks. So i had to find a utillity that wrote a few bytes every 10 minutes to the external usb hard disk. I use 'NoSleepHD' to do this.
From that i assume all hard disks need to be spun up if any one of them is being accessed.

Get a larger power supply and stop worrying about it. Honestly, a 750w Corsair is dirt cheap and will probably last longer than all of those hard drives you have.

nah it never done that on clean installs, there's something in the registry making them spin up and down all the time, I want the drives to sleep until I need them not keep running all the time, the PC is on 24/7 for years (5 years now) and keeping drives running that long will burn them out.

I dont need 6 drives running, thats why I have 3 plugged out, and having 6 plugged in will only burn them out faster and cause more problems given the fact the PC is on 24/7 the 420 watt enermax I have is fine and reliable as is, I'm looking for ways to keep the drives spun down not keep 6 going continuously

Try changing power settings to a more power saving mode and see if this still happens.
this usually happens when a program polls for a drive list or when you open my computer.
XP randomly spins up drives that are powered off by power saver settings. To prevent this, disable the service "Task Scheduler".
Hope this helps.
