Edited by: Wacktopia on 27/04/2010 12:05:32 I think the planetary scan system currently in place is way too easy. I can scan an entire planet in any ship with no planet-side structures without the use of any module or skill.
I think that this is just too simple in my opinion. It would be nice to see a ship module (relatively low fitting reqs) that allowed you to scan. This would at least add a logistical dynamic to exploring a new planet rather than just turning up in my pod (!) and instantly knowing everything about the planet.
I guess you could argue that the 'Cargo Link' jobby could transmit this information to you but it seems all too easy compared to, say, ship scanning. :P

Are you aware that you dont need to be at the planet or in system to scan it ?

Yes, I realised that after posting. Thanks for pointing it out tho. The original statement still stands: I think it's a little on the simple side.

actually, the distance you can scan from is related to a new skill. At the first level, you have to be very near it, and as the skill improves, you can scan planets for longer distances.

I know that CCP wanted to make the barrier to entry low but this is way-low.

Scan cycle time could be set to many several minutes for the T1 version and quicker for T2 and/or could support scripts.
It would be nice to see some kind of skill to finding resources other than just log in and mine
Fixed that for you.
the reality is that a newbi cant do **** with the system the way it is now. there going to spend 1.5 million or so just to set up a world whos max output is about 40-80 units of O2 per hour for a few hours.
or to spell it out for you. . . read my sig.

Yeah, fair point. Maybe I expected it to be more complex that it actually is.

well right now the complexity of trying to get enough stuff together to make a pos while they keep crashing the server is getting agrivating! Right now you need next to no skill to start off but then your output is next to nothing as well.

9 AU is not too bad of a max distance, it's roughly 8~12 jumps. it's FAR from being a overpowered tool, and i think you could go as far having a second tier of sensing, that adds another 9 AU on top if at level 5 for a total of 18 AU (similar to what a carrier can jump in one go). either way, it's not too horrifically bad atm, after all if you manage it rite you could set it up and forget it for a couple weeks as long as their is no interference by anyone else.

9 au is ~1350 thousands of millions kilometers. Many solarsystems (alone) far wider than this little number. Check your scaling measurements, you've been pointed to it not once already. -- Thanks CCP for cu |

its 9 LIGHTYEARS not AU
9 lightyears = 569157.045 Astronomical Units

personally i will prefer to use probes rather than the godly scan...
probing is a mechanic alredy in place in eve, some new probles, with astrometic 1 or 2 to keep them noob friendly, will work pretty well
sure this way is quite handly and easy to find a planet whitout wasting hours jumping all around the systems to find a nice spot but well this is eve, no need to make things super easy

Agreed, it should have made use of existing scan mechanics such as the scan window and exploration probes. That way new players could have leveraged their experience with exploration probes during the tutorial into scanning for planetary deposits.

there are skills required if you check your skills on sisi you will notice you have 5 new skills trained to lvl 5 also the only thing a newby will be able to set up is a basic tower and a few moduals like 3 or 4 and thats it. Signature not appropriate - Adida |

there is also a limit on how often you can scan, I ran into this today when I was building a new planet. to determine the best location of my command center, I was cycling through the materials to be found there, so I could work out the best spot on the planet. Somewhere along the line I got the message that you can only scan for deposits so many times per time frame. Also, considering the difficulty of setting up a base in the first place, having to manually scan with complicated stuff like probes and ship scanners and such, instead of integrating it into the planet system would make building a proper base even harder. Not that probes and such are hard to do, but it all adds up. If I have to do 20 scans on a planet to find the right spot, and each takes me tedious probing and scanning for 20 seconds, that makes setting up that base rather difficult.
