I was just reading a post from back in 2003 heres what is says:
"I, too, will be joining the ranks of people leaving Eve.
The 'why' of my leaving is a loaded question and not something easily explained, but I suppose I should give it a go, just on the rare chance someone is curious.
The game started with an incredible feature that no other massive online game had offered before; Eve offered a place where human nature could play a real role in the workings of the game world. In Eve you had genuine freedom to do and be whatever you wanted and had to live with the consequences.
The game featured the cunning and the intelligent, the moral and immoral, the weak and the stupid, there was a genuine mix of good seeds and bad seeds that gave the game a spice you couldn't find elsewhere, and it was all done on a massive scale in a gargantuan game world. Power could be seized, entire systems could be (and were) warred over, loyal allies were an asset and true alliances were worth more then anything.
Now... where has it all gone? Where are the corporations looking to control more and more rather then just buy blue prints and mine, where are the pirates that seek to make a fortune in loot rather then just making another pod kill? Where are the politics, where is the treachery, where is everything that made Eve so appealing in the first place?
Its not gone, but slowly, steadily, I see it fading away. As more and more 'features' are added to hinder the evil and wicked, the good and just become lax and idle and the universe becomes stagnant and stale, everyone working to make isk to get a better ship to make more isk, the cycle going on and one with so much waiting for things to happen... this game cannot thrive on people looking to gain better equipment and greater skills alone like Everquest and other similar games, mark my words on this, I know.
This game is so vast and there is so much waiting involved in every single facet of play that it needs politics, it needs the wicked as much as it needs the kind because conflict is the engine that drives a good story and being a part of that story is what makes it all worth while! This game isnĘt a mining simulator and it isnĘt a hardcore PK fest either, itĘs a game that offered unmatched freedom, one that could have driven up the standard massive online games ten fold and been the one that finally toppled games like Everquest by offering REAL content, not just more ęlevelingĘ and loot hunting, a virtual world where thereĘs so much more to draw you in and keep you entertainedą but rather, due to the constant complaining of the lazy and the weak no doubt, the game is tweaked and tweaked and tweaked to make it difficult for players to harm each other, we wait and wait and wait for features promised on the game box and in the manual that are always just on the horizon while the dev team continues to apply band-aid patches and item tweaks to appease the disgruntled massesą and now people are leaving, because the game is losing its glitter. When you log off and all you have done is mined some ore and gained a skill, what are you taking away? Without a story to justify it all, the rest is just a shallow distraction.
I still enjoy Eve, I still think it could recover and be all that I wanted it to be - all that it could beą but the game was released too early and this is the result of that choice. If the game recovers and becomes all it promised to be on the box when I paid for it, you can be sure I will be back to fence your stolen goods, to run my network of spies, to sell you information about your enemies and all the other serviced I offered at a reasonable fee.
Until then, this is where my part of the Eve story ends."
And i was wondering how many peaople quit eve back then and came back a short time or even a LONG time later after the game had changed.
Are you one of them people ? If so why did you quit and what made you come back?

Guilty as charged!
I played EVE right when it was released back in 2003 and it was awful. The interface was even more clunky than it is now, all anyone was doing was mining and the economy was so underdeveloped that it was astounding. Not to mention the game was a ghost town; a player could travel through dozens of systems in Empire and not see other single player.
I started playing Planetside right after I quit EVE and I played Planetside for two years straight. When I got bored with Planetside I went to MMORPG.com and looked up which sci-fi game was rated the highest and much to my amazement EVE Online was the most highly rated game... I started a new account and I've been playing ever since without a single break in subscription for two of my characters.
EVE has major flaws, and the direction it's going by cross leveling with Platform FPS and Incarna, may not be where I would have taken the game as the game director, but it's still the best multiplayer game on the market and the only game that truly deserves to be called a Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game.

Doubt people that left in 2003 will find anything different.
Its still true in 2010 for the majority of EVE. Not sure what people are bothering for. If its to 'fly a cool ship', go to SISI and buy it for 100k isk.
No point beating a dead horse telling people that going out and shooting people is the biggest high.
Losing your ships not even the lowest.

Started on release 2003 after years of hype, was playing Homeworld online when I first heard about it - people in general were pretty excited, and most of them ended up playing EVE and forming EVOL. (Molle was one of the most competitive, and actually nicest players I remember - you wouldn't know it was the same guy these days though, something about leading an alliance)
Anyways, EVE sucked at release. It was still addictive, but there was literally nothing to do but mining and extremely laggy PvP. Didn't help that I was on 56K and had a 500mhz Celeron mind you, but it ran EVE. sort of. I Figured the game was going downhill, quit, sold my account and never looked back. ...Not for 2 or 3 years anyway

I left sometime in early 2004 I think. The game really was lacking back then in many respects.
If anything Im happy I left then. Im happy I left later in response to the T20 incident and im happy Im playing now.

Those who never quit? You're looking at the wife of one of them :) I know two people that were beta testers and still play. Granted they pop back in and out and theres dry spots where they just que up training and don't play, but they were still there, sticking it out and loving every minute of it.

I remember once getting popped by her when i was still a pretty fresh noob. She had a gate camped somewhere, and i came hopping through in a cargo boat and she lit me up with that torp raven of hers, i took one hit before i warped that had me into structure, i landed at a station and she landed behind me and finished me off. In those days 5k online at peak was a big deal, and you could go though countless systems and never see a soul, and that particular day it was just a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, and i got gotted! She was the very fist person to kill me in eve. lol

Edited by: Othran on 07/05/2010 20:14:48 Quit (first time) around November 2003 after 6 months play, managed to not come back again for a year or so, then quit again - deleting characters etc.
Came back 5 years on with new account/chars.
Never really quit due to specific game issues, it was just the right thing to do at the time.
2003 was a lot harder than now. Really.
Edit oh and if we're having a "who podded you first" discussion, j0rt podded me up in Syndicate in May 2003. He did give me the chance to run but I was too clueless to do so. Stacked heatsinks meant he killed the indy in a single volley from his ship (Moa I think) - and no the ships didn't have bonuses like now.

I started in Eve at the very end of Alpha, played all of the Beta (everyday, as long as they'd let me. Remember, Beta had loads and loads of DT every single day) and went Gold the day it was released in the UK. I stayed for the first 6 months (partially role playing mode) then had to release my subscription due to financial contraints. I gave everything away in a massive Treasure Hunt that managed to cause the Amarr system to crash .
Came back a few years ago cos I kept thinking of Eve, dreaming of Eve, missing Eve. Even though, before Eve and after Eve, I created and ran one of the most successful MOH:AA clans in europe, topping Clanbase for 14 straight months, winning lots of tournies etc I kept on thinking of Eve. I just wanted back in. My wife wanted another baby, I wanted to play Eve, we came to an agreement So here I am, back again. I might moan and whinge about various Eve related things, vent my anger at devs, insult my fellow forum warriors but one thing remains true: after more than 7 years in the Eve universe i'm as much in love now as I was the first day I created my Minni char, got myself a Rifter and went hunting my fellow podsters. Hers hoping for at least another 7 years. Im looking forward to every single day of it
Yes, this is an alt cos my main is forum banned :) |

I started in 2003, quit and came back a half dozen times since. Most times I've quit I've hoped to find a new mmo (nothing against Eve, i just don't like space games much lol...) but every other mmo is so shallow by comparison.
About the only other game that came close was ultima online (the early days of siege perilous shard were fun!). What's really pathetic is that was like 12 years ago now, and no medieval mmo has come close since (daoc did a fair job in some respects). Meanwhile, if you want any kind of depth to an mmo it's been eve, eve or eve... so I can't escape lol

Got into beta, joined day after release, played 6 months, quit due to serious pc issues and the fact that things were changing on a daily basis (which got a bit annoying). My old account was given to a friend of a corp mate and still around today; he's a cool dude.
