Do you think that it is wise for CCP to unveil Incarna around the general time frame of WoW's biggest shake up?
Blizzard is certainly going to continue to dominate the MMO scene, but I think general interest in the genre will certainly rise. Maybe Incarna will reap some of the benefits?
Alternately, could Cataclysm totally dominate the news cycle, effectively neutralizing Incarna?
Either way, it definitely is going to be an exciting time to be a MMO fan. Just wondering what (if any) thoughts you might have on the subject.

To me, it's not the fact that Eve is an MMO that is the appeal. I just don't like dwarfs and fairies. I'm strictly sci-fi and EVE is really the only decent sci-fi MMO around.
I couldn't care any less for WOW or blizzard. Never played it...never will. ___________________________________________________ CSM - Bring back Medium Shader! |

To be honest. I don't think it matters.
Expansions represent the entirety of the content for WOW. Where as most of the content of EVE is caused by the scheming bastards who have set you red. Expansion for EVE are just window dressing or conflict drivers. Incarna being especially the former. and further more why do i even need a sig? |

The more WoW is around, the better. It keeps the instant gratification tards out of EVE.
Everyone knows what I'm talking about...
"ZOMG! I'm in a guild! What's a CEO? Where can I go to farm for epic loot? How do I get a Dreadnought? Do I need a titan before we can go on fleet roams? Is a battleship enough? How can I learn to lead a raid in EVE...?...what's a fleet for? Why do I have to TRAIN skills? I should already be uber because I can fly a BATTLECRUISER...."
I'll stop there, I'm sure most of you reading that are close to having an aneurysm as it is from that small sample.
I generally do whatever I can to ensure these kind of players don't stay long in EVE and entice them to GB2WoW.

I don't think you understand what I am asking.
Of course WoW doesn't compete with EVE. WoW has many times the number of players as well as taking a completely different approach (Realms and Instances) to the MMO formula. WoW is mainstream and EVE is the more niche product. Sometimes a juggernaut is good for the industry's overall stability.
I don't want to start a EVE is better than WoW thread. I just want to know if you think the timing is a good move. Can Incarna get a good rub from Cataclysm's buzz or will it be completely overshadowed? Has CCP even considered this? (I think they have.)
Personally I like all kinds of games, both on the PC and consoles. I don't want to step on anyone's wave, be it Spaceship Pew or "Dwarfs and fairies." EVE and WoW are head and shoulders above the next competitor in the genre, and it makes me very excited for Incarna and Cataclysm.

Edited by: Genya Arikaido on 07/05/2010 05:08:26 Ah, I get it. Sorry. I took the tack that having WoW somewhat overshadow EVE is a good thing, as being a Discerning Gamer, means precisely that. They'll see past the fluff of WoW and look harder...hopefully finding EVE. It's the big loud "OMG WoW IS HERE!" advertising for Cataclysm that draws the eyes of the less..umm..intelligent ..type of gamer.
Yes, we get our share of idiots as well, but they tend to simply be idiots in areas not related to the operation of a game, just social dynamics and basic psychology. Fortunately this type gives us plenty of reds to shoot at, as they seem incapable of simple diplomacy, yet play the game well enough to be challenging, keeping us happy.

Incarna isnt this year, Hammer just confirmed it today.
Cant' compare eve to any other mmo in general.
CCP is taking their time to do incarna right but rest assured they are working on it around the clock. Worry about the next expansion which introduces the jove.

I play both games, WoW (mostly on than off since nov '04) and EVE (mostly off than on since late summer of '05). I'm a fan of science fiction and fantasy, so each game has its appeal to me on a basic level outside of features and mechanics (of which both have their strengths and weaknesses).
Cataclysm will be a large expansion with, no doubt, a lot for players to do while Incarna appears to be more of a novelty feature. Cata seems more geared to retain subscribers whereas Incarna looks to be something to lure in new players. If that is the case, then (IMO) EVE would be best served by introducing Incarna during the inevitable "lull" after WoW's expansion. |

eve=/=wow, each has its own thing that appeals to each population, ill be honest, when i want to pvp and not lose jack **** ill play wow... when i want something to raise my heart rate ill pvp in eve, but if i want a real adrenaline rush ill go lick the gf on the face and wrestle with her while she tries to slap the crap outa me :) each person has different things they get out of different places.
i will play eve over wow, straight up...

WoW is failing, it really is, the quality of gameplay just isn't there anymore. Cataclysm is trying to keep it's subscribers with the same old stuff in a new wrapper, Incarna is new stuff with a new wrapper.
CCP has no real competition from Activision's WoW, it's a whole different genre with different playstyles. CCP can release their content whenever they think it's time for it.

Well from the start WOW has been making absolutely sure that everyone are in equal terms to point where even brain deads have equal chance of competing against vets. This was fairly obvious when in the beginning only thing fixed/nerfed where items or ways of using skills in PvP that even remotely gave some sort of advantage that wasn't designed by Blizzard. Like a lighter you found from a dungeon and had 3 uses for almost 0 damage and it got nerfed to a gimmick for giving you essentially 3 time only boost to dps in PvP ... I could go on and on about things that were changed just because someone whined (or even remotely could had benefited) from it.
I hope EVE will always stay out of main stream if being a big hit would mean handling balancing things "the blizzard way".

From here (about half way down):
Originally by: CCP Hammer Incarna in it's full form won't be ready by Winter. I have to be honest and manage expectations there. Although I can say we're working really hard on bring you something of value that is Incarna related in that release.

Incarna isn't meant to compete against Cataclysm, it's meant to compete against Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Dammit. I'm literally sitting in my chair, thinking "It's been 4 years since I even heard of walking in stations." CCP, I speak for myself here when I say: Why is Incarna like a rainbow? We hear a tidbit about it possibly coming out soonÖ then the rainbow moves away from us again. What are you currently working on polishing? What features are you adding to make it awesome?
ANY details would be nice, especially since some of us are actually excited about this.

This tbh
The ability to walk in stations would imo attract ALOT of people, this is the beginning of EvE imo, last 7 years was testing XD, I for one think incarna will be out next year 2011 conspiracy (only because of the fanfest date change / comments) :D:D
WoW has been the same thing since it came out, extra levels, new monsters, new instances and hmm thats it? This is so not my main

If expansions for EVE were window dressing only, we should have the most fancy UI in gaming history by now. ________________________

I have played both and will probably go back to WoW for a bit when Cataclysm comes out. Be interesting to have a look although I doubt it'll ever hook me back in.
Clearly in the past there have been games that have launched badly because they've timed their launch to coincide with WoW. Warhammer Online launched 3 weeks before WoW's Wrath of the Lich King expansion and saw a massive amount of players do their free month that came with the game then move to WoW.
Eve's model is different.
For one, it's not launching. It's pretty established.
Next I don't think Eve is as dependent on expansions as games like WoW. When Eve's expansion comes out later this month the effect on my gameplay will be minimal. I'll train one of my alts to play with the new planetary interaction system and spend about 20 mins a week doing that until it seems boring or unprofitable.
In WoW and games like WoW the Expansion IS the game. Everyone who plays WoW now is in Dalaran doing Northrend Heroics and Northrend raids. The old content is just an auction house and a noob zone now.
Likewise when Cataclysm comes Northrend will empty.
Eve expansions are just not that big a deal. They fine tune an experience we're already enjoying and would enjoy without the Expansion.

I for one am looking forward to Diablo III, I probably will try out cataclysm but it took 8 months after Wotlk to come out for me to try it only to last 2 weeks and that was only because I heard stormpeaks / sholazar basin (sp?) music at a friends and was like WOAH MUST DOWNLOAD.
Same thing will proably happen with Cataclysm, but this time I think I will just rip the music from the files instead of actually playing. This is so not my main

says wowstats with less then 3million active 80's, and over half the 80 population has not one but two alts at max level. Even being generous and assuming none of those are alts thats not very many subs compared to their 11-12mil.
25% of your playerbase remaining isn't great retention, Whilst eve continues to grow. Byebye.

No I dont find it fair at all. CCP dont have to squish their competitors below their feet whereever they walk all the time, just because they are The Best.
