What is the difference between Drones that are set to "focus fire" and drones that are not set to "focus fire"? Does it have anything to do with the target's speed and/or size maybe?

Focus Fire (Supposedly) Makes all your drones auto aggress the same target. I think it's a bit broken though, as my drone groups seem to have a tendency to split up sometimes. ---

I did a test once to see how drones behaved. I had always assumed they did not focus fire if they were split from each other but it turned out that had no effect on it. Their ability to ignore focus fire seemed totally random and arbitrary. There was no logic to which NPC they attacked either when set on agressive. They would happily fly right across the pack to agrees an NPC completely ignoring the closest.
It would be nice if we had more control over them, such as setting a size limit or distance of the targets they can choose.

The sad part of this is that drones now are WAY more controllable and predictable than they used to be, before the nifty little control panel where you can actually tell them what to do. At least they, for the most part, stay focused if FF is enabled, whereas in the bad old days you had to make sure to tell the drones to engage each new target or all 5 would pick random targets and fly off to them (usually the furthest away/least critical targets), or even just come back and orbit. --------------------------------------------

I filed a petition asking how the mechanic was meant to work, assuming I had misunderstood.
It's a bug. They asked me to file a bug report (lol!) so I gather it isn't working as intended at this stage.

I make no guarantees on this, but I think the drones agress whoever fires on you next when their previous task runs out. The more things you have firing at you, the greater the chance that something different will fire between one drone clearing one target and selecting another to the next.

If drones are set to focus fire they will tend to select their next target as a group. However, this is buggy, so it's best to set them to focus fire but still order them manually. And set them to aggressive of course, else they won't select a target at all. Sol: A microwarp drive? In a battleship? Are you insane? They arenĘt built for this! Clear Skies - The Movie

AFAIK focus fire has always been broken. It's a given headache than no one bothers to bug report anymore. It has apparently been "fixed" ( ) several times already as well. _____

Actually ... it may be a bit of counter intuitiveness that is called for here.
What I do ...
Is set the drones to:
1) Passive 2) Focus Fire.
When I first start shooting, I will select a target I am already shooting at with the ship - and have them engage that. After that - whatever I shoot at - they will attack - unless they beat me to it and start attacking a new ship before I fire the ships guns at another one. Then I pretty much let the drones kill the ship they're after. But - if I want a specific ship killed - I'll select that target and order them to Engage.
I've actually very rarely had any trouble with Focus Fire. If I do, I select a Target, right click on Drones In Space (so that I am ordering all of them) - and select Engage - and that will get them all working together again.
*shrug*
Of course, here, I am actively flying the mission - not doing it AFK.

Passive is a bad idea as you won't be able to order your drones to attack their next target if you're jammed. Sol: A microwarp drive? In a battleship? Are you insane? They arenĘt built for this! Clear Skies - The Movie
