After playing Half life 2 for a while ... letting the hype wash over me, I've lost the urge to play it any more. The physics plug in is good ... but the game environment is pretty narrow and guided.
I've just got to the point where I've parked the buggy in the shed .. does it get much better after that?
Another grumble .. that Steam system sucks. Half way through another game and Steam pops up (minimises the game window) to tell me about some Steam related download. All I wanted to do was play HL2 and Valve use it as an opportunity to crap all over my desktop. I also caught it leeching my bandwidth downloading some crap I hadn't asked for.
Anyone else feel this way or should I head straight for the door marked 'Grumpy old men'.

You can turn off those Steam notifications and as for your review of Half Life 2...........are you trying to be deliberately controversial?

Start walking.
It starts picking up after that and there is an offline option for the game.

Nope .. that comes in a later post entitled "The corncob .. the sandpaper .. and the Rubber Nun" :D
All I'm saying about HL2 is that after the dust had settled - I felt the gameplay was overly guided and a bit 2D. In comparison - the kind of freedom you get in a classic like 'Operation Flashpoint' is much more engrossing because you rarely feel like there is a big broom sweeping you in one particular direction.

I'd stick with it, if I were you, it does get better. I thought the final chapter was absolutely amazing.
Of course, its a linear game, but I think that is necessary in order to progress the story. And the environment is so perfectly realised (IMHO), that the linearity (is that a word?) doesn't bother me at all...
Trust me, if you play it for nothing else, just get to that final chapter.

OpFlash was linear too. The same mission sequence, the same area, go too far off, you get "lost". Don't let the massive island fool you. -------------------------------- CCP can patch away bugs, but they can't patch away stupidity. |

I agree about the missions progression - but the way you could tackle each mission was so wide open. I remember driving a tractor in to a Russian base once. Quality.
Nice to see the 'Mercenary' brand still ticking over. Whatever happened to Omri? I loved that dude - he taught me everything I know about frigate combat. -TT

hl2 is nothing but "today's" fps: great graphics engine but lacking in gameplay imo. one thing that might have ruined its gameplay b4 launch was the hype though as i see that happening to other games, people expect more than the game can deliver cause of hype. -------------------------------------------------------- Eternal darkness begins where your nightmare ends...... |

Personally I have not played HL2, I have no intention of doing it and I never had.
The original was ok, but I never understood why the sequal was so hyped.

You need to be podded, repeatedly
Then again, I *hated* Doom 3 with a passion, when everyone else was going nuts over it.
Each to their own.
(you still need to be podded!)

It's true, hl2 is pretty linear, but aren't all those fps out there exactly the same?
It's a mistake to compare it to op flashpoint. That game is more of a simulation than an fps, hence it focuses on realism than fast-paced combat/narrative.
Even in technical terms, those two types of games can't be contrasted. hl/hl2 render/calculate a small number of units/structures since the plot is controlled and linear. Ofp has to keep track of hundreds of units/structures, and even though someone would expect otherwise it STILL had great graphics for it's time (although it des cheat by limiting the units to your missions nearby area, hence the "got lost")
Don't get me wrong here, ofp is prolly the best game I've ever played (non-stop for months that is) that has to do with 3D graphs and shooting. It's multiplayer is even better (although a bit LAN-oriented). Ahhh, who doesn't remember that mission where you are lost in the forest. That game gave me a true sense of direction and taught me to read maps/orient even without a compass :)
Anyway, I've finished hl2 a couple of days ago. I gotta say it's AI/physics is amazing, it does place new standards in the scene. Ofc, it's graphics pwn in general and I dn't think we can argue about that. In overall it's a VERY good game, but I gotta say, I'd rather be playing ofp2 than hl2

Doom3 had hype.
I bought it August 3rd, and uninstalled it August 18th, having played only 3 hours total of gameplay on the first day i installed it. That game was terrible. Too dark, and the flashlight juggling was just a complete joke (what, marines in the future have STOPPED wearing helmets with lights attached? give me a break).
Half-life 2 was breathtaking to me. I loved the airboat thing. Counterstrike source is nothing special. I actually like 1.6 more because my bullets hit nothing but thin air in Source. Now DoD Source is something to watch out for. HLDM2 is fun for a while if u need to kill some random people for the hell of it.
The linear progression of the game doesnt bother you so much if you wrap yourself in the story and less in the game mechanics.
