Economically and ease of use speaking... is a BC hands down the best 0.0 ratting boat? I've looked into HACS, a few assault frigs (Ishkur for example), and considered a few BS hulls... Any "old head" insight? Not the best or toughest question ever so I'm prepped for a bashing. |

High DPS with damage type choice, great range, good align time and top speed.
For cheaper, get a raven, a maelstrom, a dominix or a pulse apoc

A Vexor. It deals about as much damage as a BC, is smaller and costs less. BS won't hit you anyway, so whatever tank you get from 2 hardeners and a MAR is enough. T1 setup works just fine and the cost of it returns at the visit to the first belt.

what sort of rats are you fighting? is it just belt ratting or high-end CAs. If i were still just belt ratting I'd be running a blaster rokh for angels, but once i started taking on high-end anoms solo i wanted the smaller sig/speed of a t3 to make tanking easier. But in all fairness angels like to charge right at your 8 big ol` blasters of doom in belts, and the few that want to stay at range are still in the range of null on a blaster rokh

A t3 cruiser is the best for 0.0 ratting/Complexes hands town, especially the Tengu variety.
Very fast, hard to scan down, subsystems can be swapped to change your t3 cruiser around, lots of variety in fitting.
The only issue is that a Tengu in particular chews through ammo like no other ship in the game. ~~ Hyey

From belt ratting in Great Wildlands, t1 cruiser with t1 fit is a minimum. The whole thing pays for itself after killing 4-6 npc battleships, that is like cleaning 3-4 belts.
Battlecruiser would be better, but I am not really ready to spend 16 mil on one and then loose it while trying to get back to high sec in the end of the night. I can afford loosing 3 mil t1 cruisers for a very long time.

golem best IMO , you kill npc and while doing that you loot and salvage . ofc only in safe systems ,if you are in a hot zone forget about it...

I found the Drake pretty good - fantastic tank, kills quickly and is quicker to GTFO than a BS - not to mention having a spare slot for a cheap cloak.
I'm curious to try the Cerb out though...DPS should be about the same, but much more able to GTFO.

does your corp own that space or are you ratting behind someones back?
if you own the space and you know what your doing (meaning you know how to watch local) BS would be the best.. depending on your budget... raven/domi for low budget... or you can go for faction/marauders... as i said, if you know what youre doing chances to get ganked are almost non existant...
if you dont own the space, youll want something faster, so id say some HAC or BC... preferably some with low ammo usage... |

Drakes are pretty good vs any rat type.
If you're aware of what type of space you're going to be in, then you can do better. Eg: A Harbinger will be better vs Sanshas, a 'cane will be better vs Angels. But a drake will be pretty good vs anything.

I've used ishtars in safe space (mostly because I can fill the highs with tractors/salvagers and loot easiest), and AFs for ninja ratting in busier areas. More or less any ship /will/ do it, if fit right, it's just a case of how easy it is.
Basically, BCs (esp. Drake, but any of the tier 2 ones) are your best mix of cost, gtfo and speed. Obviously a Golem or a Tengu will wtfbbq any belt rat ever and also high level anoms but it's also a lot of uninsurable ISK for that Curse/Vaga combo to come and melt.

Seems strange but I had great success with a Pilgrim fit for angel space (explosive hardeners, MAR II, AB, 3 425mm AC's and Valkyrie drones). Can adjust the tank and ammo for any rats and the cov-ops cloak is priceless when moving around and operating in 0.0. DPS was more than enough to handle battleships and tank never got close to breaking in a week or two out in great wildlands, pack a full cargo of fusion ammo and you will be set for hours and hours days on end.

note: Rigs are on there cause it's my PvP boat, just went off to 0.0 to rat for some kicks and sec status back.

How safe is the space? If it's safe enough, why not go with a marauder? If, on the other hand, you need to be stealthy and sneak around neutral or hostile space, probably a T3 or a battlecruiser is best. Ratting with cruisers, assault ships, or stealth bombers is possible, and is kind of cute, but you're simply not going to be earning the ISK as quickly that way.
(Note: Using a stealth bomber to scan the belts for faction spawns in enemy space is viable. Don't do it in friendly space, because people really hate that.)

A lot of it depends on the rats, and your truesec level.
When I was in Stain, which is effectively -1.0 for rats, a BC wouldn't really cut it. I used a BS. If you are in -0.3, a BC might work well.

I used a widow ratting for the lolz of it once. It was against guristas and surprisingly it was great at ratting. Of course this ship is expensive and you would have to be extremely inane like I am to even rat with such a ship. This is how I fitted it.
highs 5x's Siege tech 2 launchers with long range juggs. 1x's cloaky 1x's drone augmentor (don't laugh)
mids 5x's caldari specific tech 2 ecm's. 3x's pwnt's (target painters)
lows 2x's hypnos signal dispersion thingys (boosts ecm strength) 2x's ballistic control units tech 2.
rigs 1x's that one rig that increases missile flight time 1x's that other rig that increases missile velocity
warrior 2's for drones.
This setup is great for wtf lolz, will kill bs's in little effort while you jam them, will 1-2 shot most cruisers, bc's, and frigs. Also it is already set up for limited pvp, you could theoretically use multispectral ecms and be ready for anything headed your way to gank you, but always be on the ready for a squad to try and get you.

A lot of questions naturally follow: - Is the space safe? Do you plan on looting and salvage? Then Marauder - Are you jumping through lots of unsafe space and need no loot? I've had good luck with a Vagabond - What kinds of rats?
As a general rule of thumb, people fly Caldari for PvE for a reason. Drake, Raven and Tengu will all do amazing things to 0.0 rats.
If you're just making an economic decision and you want to risk as little investment to maximize your income I think it's hard to beat a Drake. So cheap you can pay for your investment in a few hours of ratting. Hard as nails. Fairly efficient versus all rat sizes.

Your BS is gonna have 2x the killpower of your cruiser, for about 10x the cost. BC will be somewhere in the middle. The only ship I've been able to evade PKer's in is a rupture. This is clearly a signature. |
