I just noticed this statement in the latest EVE Gate dev blog.
Quote:
Our plan is to eventually offer everything on EVE Gate that you can do in game apart from explorations in space and blowing stuff up.
Right, there's that beasty word "eventually" in there. And, of course, no time frame given.
But that pretty much sounds as if station traders might be able to uninstall their EVE client. -- EVEWalletAware - an offline wallet manager |

Edited by: Taram Caldar on 14/05/2010 19:26:06 I have mixed emotions about EVE Gate... as long as it doesn't allow people to play when they can't log in I have no problem with it. But if they make it able to manipulate market orders from outside the game it's WAY to easy for people to bot without CCP having any means of detection. I really don't like that idea, as nice as it would be to be able to manage market orders off-line I think it's far too easy to abuse.
I only dabble in the market... but even so the .01 isk wars are annoying enough with just the players logged in. It'll just be a nightmare if everyone and their dog can play 0.01 isk wars from a web browser.

I'm not a big fan of this EVE-gate thingy but afraid it is inevitable. PPL will keep demanding things like this and I think EVE will not be the only MMO in the future that will have this feature.
Doesn't mean I have to like it though, afraid it will turn EVE into a browsergame for me :P

I'm skeptical of EVE Gate, too. Not because of bots, but because of my general disliking of social network sites.
I don't think bots will be more a problem with EVE Gate than without it. If you really don't care about the EULA, it doesn't matter if you need to figure out some window handles + SendMessage(s) to simulate clicks or sent some HTTP post requests. -- EVEWalletAware - an offline wallet manager |

You don't have EVE running in Window mode in the background in your office??
Hell I have EVE running on a second monitor and my Boss knows it, he said "As long as you do your work, I don't care if you have your game window open." After all he would a hypocrite because he has WOW running on his computer, and I know it, and he knows I know.

What if you can modify market orders... but not see the market itself Imagine the loss undercutting with 0.02 when only 0.01 was needed!!!

That's the way I'd do it :) Sure, you can check your wallet, create and accept contracts, post new orders, manipulate existing ones. But who says the contract or buy/sell markets have to be visible outside the client?

To me there is already a sort of Eve Gate. Eve Commander. It lets me check all my orders, industry stuff, let's me see my trade performance as well as char info (training etc.). Ofcourse you can't alter info with eve commander.

When IGN did the preview of Tyrannis a while ago they also mentioned EVE Gate (apparently referred to as 'Spacebook' in the offices of CCP). They mentioned that although there are plans to make information visible from the outside through Gate, they had no intention of ever allowing the game to be manipulated from anything other than the game client.
Which makes perfect sense for a lot of reasons, mainly the ease of using bots.
Another thought tho: If they allow access to market info from outside the client, wouldn't there be a risk of the trade game changing dramatically due to the possibity of gaining a much greater amount of information for analysis without much effort. I mean if you can just pull xml's or something from the web and run them through an analyser, you can then easily spot trade opportunities.
Right now that kind of (reliable) info is still hard to come by and takes effort.

Theres one potential problem. As soon as Gate starts to get into direct competition with existing 3rd party apps, the future of EVE API based 3rd party tools will be questionable. Its an unequal fight in case the Gate team has access to more powerful interfaces than the rest of us. Of course whether products like EVE Commander will further be available will mostly depend on the personal motivation of the owner. But don't expect every 3rd party developer to continue to spend much of his personal time on his project with Gate looming ahead and "offering everything". -- EVE Trade Master - Web based market analysis, asset- and order tracking. |

I believe that m*cr* software would find it much, much easier to read some text on the market screen. Perhaps there are even one or two in Jita atm?
Besides, CCP currently rewards bot behavior in the marketplace with profits coming from how ofter you play the 0.01 ISK game. That is a solvable problem. CCP could dramatically reduce this behavior anytime they wanted and to date has not bothered.
I don't see why any of the existing market bots would convert over to using EVE Gate. Nor do i see why many who have not been motivated to do market bots before now will suddenly decide to. And if they do decide to b*t, then I would expect the existing b*t solutions might be a more robust way to go until EVE Gate is debugged more.

It is already an unequal fight in that CCP controls the data and could at any time prohibit (or prevent it being charged for) any third party apo. So you can't justify investing much in a business that is just one new CCP MBA or lawyer hire away from being prohibited. So it is just volunteer enthusiasts;
OTOH, let's be polite and just say that a sophisticated, modern UI has not been a priority for CCP to date and thus there is considerable opportunity for third parties to address.
