So I'm going to be "obtaining" Maya 2011. Going to figure out how to work the damned thing too. Essentially I just want to learn how to use a 3D modeling program, and Maya does what I want (plus certain games I like use Maya for their models....). Anyways, I was wondering what people's opinions on Maya were, and if they have any useful tips on how to use it...
Also, does CCP use Maya? Cuz it seems like they do... what with that cloth simulation they did a while back and all...

If you successfully learn to use Maya, there won't be another 3D program that you probably couldn't learn pretty quickly afterwards. If you have never done 3D before I believe you are proverbially jumping into the Atlantic to learn how to swim, but I admire people who set themselves big challenges
What's the motivation behind picking up 3D? You mentioned games? Do you want to turn it into a career at some point or are you just trying it out to see if you like it?

Well Wuffles, I don't like drawing, but I enjoy being creative. Plus from what I've read and learned on the internetz, Maya is about as good as it gets for a 3D rendering program, and there's also the motivation that if I learn Maya, I'm pretty much set. Although game development is not in my (foreseeable) future, it could possibly aid me in presentations on my hopeful career centering on Astrofizzix.

Maya is a great program and you can do pretty much anything your heart desires in it. But depending on what your intentions are it may be a bit more then you need. If your just looking to do some modeling and stuff along those lines, you can use any of the lesser 3d programs, and they will probably be easier for you to learn. Maya is serious business.
I personally like Lightwave 3D and its done pretty much anything I've ever needed. Please resize image to a maximum of 400 x 120, not exceeding 24000 bytes. If you would like further details please mail [email protected] ~Saint |

On a slight tangent, does anyone have enough experience on both Blender and Maya (or whatever other major 3D package) who would care to share how they compare and perform when it comes to producing assets for games? Is Blender a "good enough" alternative for such use?

3D animation student here
Personally, I'd recommend 3ds Max for what you want to do. It's slightly easier to learn than Maya for a beginner to 3D and a lot of people find it more comfortable for modeling (compared to, say, animation). It also has quite a bit of the games market share.
The alternatives are all fairly decent - each of the big packages has its strengths and weaknesses and there is no real best, but Max, Maya and XSI are used the most. I will say if you have no problems with "obtaining" Maya or Max don't bother with Blender. It's a good alternative if you want to go legit, but nobody uses it professionally for games as far as I know
Oh, and just thought I'd mention if you're a student you can get all the big Autodesk packages (even including Mudbox, which is great) free from the Autodesk Education Community.

And open source. Forget that proprietary crap. Just get Blender. You don't want to go to all the trouble of buying or pirating something you're not going to get support and beat-for-beat development for.
