Hi folks
I have no clue about (professional) accounting, yet I feel that for running a successful (large scale) manufacturing/research business within EVE Online one might need some sort of accounting software to keep track of costs and profitability, same as in an RL corporation. Is anybody using something along those lines?
I myself have begun to mess with http://www.freeaccountingsoftware.net/ which is freeware but I am still looking for other, possibly easier options. I am looking for something between Excel-Sheets and SAP ;-). Any thoughts (except that I'm totally nuts) ?
Cheers

Your not nuts, I suspect a lot of the large scale producers use some form of accounting and possibly inventory management software to manage operation's. You'll probably be better off using one of the specialized eve apps that people develop. There are hundreds. Check out the technology forum

I personally use a combination of Eve HQ - Access 2007 and Excel 2007 to produce a monthly report of all activity from the corp wallet (and my personal if I wanted to) for each of the wallet type transactions in alphabetical order.
While it's not a single application the excel pivot table reports make it easy to get the sub total for each category which is then manually entered for the month it applies to and that gives me a historic viewable income/expense totals.
I could produce a report for you (or your corp) if you provide me your user id and full api-key. Confidentiality guaranteed.
If I could produce an application I would in a shot and release it along with my industrial organiser spreadsheet.

I use Quicken to manage my personal finances. Granted, it's not free, but I've been using it for years.
I recently created an Eve file, and opened an account with my character's name. Alts will have their own accounts, etc., if I ever have any.

Thanx for these comments - I am not that insane after all :-).
What I am looking for is something to:
a) Put a value to my inventory b) Manage my inventory c) Control my costs and profits (of invention and production)
I am still scanning through the thread mentioned above. I also came across the Evelopedia page listing a few tools: http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Market_resources#Applications ...

I am currently under contract to produce an application to manage something similar to what you need I think. It will be finished in 2-3 months depending on quality testing. While I have to meet specific requirements, if there is anything you want specifically please mail me! The program will be free once its complete also. :) (assumeing ofc it gets done properly :P) -Geek

Accounting software won't hold you back anywhere near as much as the corp roles system will.
Can't create a large scale manufacturing business as the required Factory Managerrole allows any memeber to cancel all jobs.
Add your voice to the many who have been asking for this to be fixed for 2-3 years.

The games biggest failure is that its built on "corporations" yet there is no way to do corporate book keeping in game.
Its absurd really.
They could at least moderate this problem though by instituting corporate exchanges(not markets) to obviate some of the need for book keeping.
Wherever you went - Here you are.

I am, but so far I've had to do it manually in the main. There isn't a single Eve 3rd party accounting application. Sure, you have apps that give you cash-based info - but none give you accruals based info.
As for stocks - accounting values stock and fixed assets at cost, while most EVEites like to value their stock at selling prices.

I use Microsoft Small Business Accounting 2009 and Excel to determine revenue and keep track of inventory. And I use Matlab/R for running various statistical/time series analysis on my trade data. PRAISE THE SCOTTISH FOLD!!

I've felt the pain on this and initially spent a fair bit of time building complex models in Excel, farting around with Access and doing the same sort of looking for an inventory-type, retail-friendly accounting package.
I ended up with a decent Excel spread, but I've decided to basically ignore the concept of materials inventory for right now - I keep the material prices, cost, anticipated sell all updated in my spread and figure that's "close enough" without driving myself nuts. I can tell if I'm making money on a per unit basis, and I base my runs on that for now. I produce a weekly P&L that accounts for inventory on-hand, but clearly it's an estimate at best.
I can tell this is *not* going to work as we start thinking about a POS.
Not sure if any of this was useful :) It's a good thread and I appreciate all the answers as I sort through this myself.
