Hi Buller,
Decryptors are used up in the invention process, whether you are successful or not.

Data interface stays Decryptors get used and dont return
Also dont use decryptors for module invention, not worth it. Only some ships are worth it.
If you use EVE HQ you can download this invention plugin: http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1223530

Dont worry Buller
By making mistakes and noticing them, you improve.
I still from time to time re-learn things i tought I already knew. i always make mistakes.
The thing is that with time you learn. And there are a lot of things to learn in production in EVE :)

As a general rule I only use decryptors on cruiser size ships or higher.. the cost of the wasted decryptors just doesn't balance the reduced wasted materials for anything smaller.
Most modules, Ammo, and drones fall in the smaller category. For example, a base hammerhead 2 bpc with a -4 ME still only uses 1 or 2 of most of the parts per drone so except to affect the number of runs, decryptors are useless. You can make a full cost/benefit for large modules, frigs, and dictors but I generally don't bother.

Math says otherwise.

Always buy the decryptor that adds nine runs and costs 25-40 million isk. You should use one with every invention.
Wherever you went - Here you are.
