After getting killed in 0.4, I figured I'd cause a little trouble of my own. I found a low level character after hours and figured I'd take him out. I was at the star gate and he was a minimum of 20km away. When I attacked the Federation Navy (in a rifter) immediately killed me... I guess I'm not understanding how this works. I thought you could pvp in low sec.

There are still sentry guns in low sec on both stations and gates. If the other player is not red as in under -5 sec status or flagged as a global criminal then the gate guns will shoot you if you for as long as you have GCC (global criminal countdown)

So what you're saying is, near stations and gates only attack players who show up red... asteroid belts and planets I can simply attack them? (and not warp to the gate or stations while my gcc is counting down)

if you can tank the sentry guns you can still fight on gates, but u need to be in a bc/bs to do that

Correct, unless you are in a ship that can tank the gate guns long enough to kill and get away. You will also take a sec hit while aggression non flagged or non red targets meaning after a bit of time you will end up with low sec status and will no longer be able to go into high sec, with out being chased by the faction navys.

If you are going to try this for the first time (and I do highly suggest giving it a bash, lowsec pvp is best pvp) then remember gate guns put out ~350dps so you will need to tank/outlast your targets dps PLUS the sentry gun dps if engaging a non-outlaw. According to my Gate Guns damage profile in EFT, the damage spread is 32/32/56/56 (18%/18%/32%/32%)
I'm not 100% sure where I got this information, probably on these boards somewhere, but it has worked for me when coming up with a fit to tank gate guns.

Would that be 350 per gun?

On any gate, there are two guns that will shoot at you. It's 352 dps total (before resists are considered) if both guns are firing on you.
The damage profile includes all 4 damage types with more kin/therm than em/exp:
18.18% EM, 18.18% Explosive, 31.82% Kinetic and 31.82% Thermal
If you're new to low-sec, I recommend you focus on belt piracy in a cruiser or frig hull while getting the hang of the rules. --------------------
