So I recently got into trading in Jita and I've been making decent profit, about 1m a night afk trading, but I was wondering if I've been going about it the wrong way. I try to avoid the .01 isk wars that people start with me and raise my buy price by 1 full isk to 5k isk depending on what i'm trading, and was wondering anybody's opinion on this, am i doing something wrong using this strategy?

I think your biggest flaw is the inability to see the obvious. As an example: Plenty of threads about "New Trader" handy, even one sticky at the top of the forum, and you just seem to need your own little space.
You may go look at those threads now.

Thou shalt adjust with 0.01 ISK. Not 1, not 20, not 500, not 10000, not 22; nor 2, 15, 400 or any other number thou may imagine.
It shall be 0.01 and no other.
Not 6.
Not 5000.
Not 0.5.
Not by 7.
But only thru 0.01.

The problem is that when you deal with high volumes, lowering by more than .01 isk costs you a lot of money. When you're dealing with billions, that adds up! Lets say that you are trading 10 billion and you .01 isk someone. If you .02'd instead of .01ing, you would lose 100,000 isk! That's enough to buy 10 (TEN!)shuttles! We don't waste isk here, sire. No, we do not!

I think the problem now may be that there are so many of these stupid threads. New people see 3 or 4 for of the "I'm a new trader, what should I do?" on the first page that they think its the correct thing to do.
I know people are just being helpful, but I wish they wouldn't respond to these. Its not about not helping them, they can ask their questions in the stickies above. Just a personal preference and perhaps I am alone on this one.

Nope. Just be careful you don't start becoming hostile on a normal basis.

Rang3, do alot of reading. When you have finished do some more. Seriously there are some gems to be found out there. Sounds like you have got your feet wet already which is the next stage.
As for price raising/lowering etc. My 2c - Just do anything to make sure you are the next person to sell or be sold to. Sometimes you have to take a hit to profit to keep control of a market or get your goods turning over.

Both the Market Resource page in the EVElopedia and the Market Discussion Resource Thread stickied at the top of this forum are worth reading.
There are a plethora of stories in the Market Resource page alone which will keep you gainfully entertained for an evening while you're plying your 1M ISK/day game.
I played a little game with myself just now: see how much profit I can make from 30M ISK while reading these forums at work. Got my covops frigate out, placed a buy order in that station over there. Waited for it to fill (sometime between arriving at work, and my lunch time), dragged it to that other station some small number of jumps away, posted a sell order using those things I'd just bought. Sometime between lunch time and now I sold all those items. I made 6M ISK profit, in a trade that was about 5% of the market for that specific item.
The only advice I can really give you at this point in time is this: I'm a long way from Jita.
