I've been flying a Kestrel for a couple of weeks while grinding PvE (which has actually been a lot of fun). However, I just attempted my first Level 2 and almost got clobbered by the merc NPCs on the Damsel in Distress mission. My standard launchers simply don't have the range to compete with the NPCs who were engaging me from about 40km (I can only engage at about 24km). I am training for a Caracal, but it'll be a couple days yet. Does anyone have a fitting for a Kestrel for maximum missile range engagements? I don't mind spending the isk for named or faction mods as I tend to use PvE ships for as long as possible (i.e. until they are hopelessly outclassed). In fact, having the better fittings is part of the fun for me. I checked Battleclinic but they are almost all standard launcher fittings. So, I just didn;t know if a Heavy launcher fitting was realistic?

What is your current fit? What tactic do you use? Do you use right ammunition?

The main problem here is that heavy launchers are cruiser sized modules, alongside assault launchers and heavy assault launchers, there's no way to fit them on frigates without hopelessly gimping the rest of your fit.
The Kestrel is fine for Level 1s since it has long range (comparatively) to make up for its lousy tank. There's practically no way to use the Kestrel in Damsel in Distress since you start at close range and have multiple high damage enemies which outrange you.
I suggest an Assault Missile Launcher Caracal, by the way, since most of the NPCs you'll meet in L2 missions will be frigates, against which heavy missiles will do less than optimal damage.
PS, you might want to resize your signature before a mod sees it. 400x120 is the maximum allowed on these forums.

OK - thanks. I did a bit more homework and it looks like the Kestrel is the wrong ship for the job. I'll fly it on some Level 1s until I can pilot a Caracal or other cruiser. Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Can a Kestrel with its lousy PG fit all that? I know my Kestrel used 2 power upgrades on low?
Anyway, Damsel in distress doesn't require you to destroy any vessels, just destroy the hub and get the damsel out. To tank the damage you could use a shield booster and a cap booster. But there's L2 missions that are simply too hard for a T1 frigate to survive (like Recon mission).

Well, if cost really isn't a concern, might I suggest this:
[Caldari Navy Hookbill, fun] Caldari Navy Ballistic Control System Caldari Navy Ballistic Control System
Gistii B-Type Small Shield Booster Coreli A-Type 1MN Afterburner Invulnerability Field II Cap Recharger II Cap Recharger II
Caldari Navy Rocket Launcher, Caldari Navy Thorn Rocket Caldari Navy Rocket Launcher, Caldari Navy Thorn Rocket Caldari Navy Rocket Launcher, Caldari Navy Thorn Rocket
Small Bay Loading Accelerator I Small Warhead Flare Catalyst I Small Hydraulic Bay Thrusters I
The whole thing, including the ship itself, runs about 400m. It will laugh at any level 1 mission(5 minute Worlds Collide, faster if you blitz it) and can do any level 2 without any real trouble as well. I even did a couple level 3s with it, but that's not advisable. It goes over 1100m/s, so while its tank doesn't look very good numbers wise, it speed tanks beautifully. Its DPS for me was 147 with a range of 18km. Will be a little less for you cause of your lower missile support skills.
I used that ship for a couple days while getting standings up with a corp that really hated me. Hee hee. It now sits in my hanger collecting dust. It was too much fun to fly to get rid of it.
If you wanna go all out on cost, switch the invul to a navy invul. I didn't cause It simply didn't need it. I rarely even turned on the tank(either booster or invul) for the level 1 missions.

A prime example of why buying ISK/PLEX dosn't make up for I.Q or skillpoints LOL

you can do L2 with frigates and kestrell is even a good frig choise.
*PASSIVE SHIELD TANKER SETUP*
high: 4x malkhut standard missile launchers
med: 1x medium regolith shield extender ,2x resistance amplifiers t2 ( kin & therm for gurista)
low: 1x micro k-exhaust core augmention, spr 2
rigs: 3x core defence purgers
Keep in mind that if you have not top fitting skills you should downgrade some t2 to best named, or change rigs to meet your fitting requirements.
edit: obviusly also move to cruiser works.

Failtroll tears are the sweetest tears of all. Actually, I have three accounts - one a year old, one 6 months, one (this one) two months. Simple matter of transferring isk, little Einsteins. You're so cute when you whine. Like little hungry baby chicks in a nest.

Lies!
If you had a year old character with enough cash for a faction fit Kestrel(which even Chribba aspires to) then why are you asking for fitting advice for a level one mission? And why do you not know that Heavy launchers are a bad idea for a frigate?
