So, a few days ago, my mining alt was chilling in a belt, eating Asteroids with a Retriever (as is her role in life and EVE) when a faction rat spawned. It almost took out the Retriever before my little T1 light drones killed it and its friends, but it dropped a 1-run BPC for a Daredevil.
Since the only non-Gallente Spaceship Command skill I currently have is Minmatar Frigate III, this is possibly the only faction ship I can fly, so I built it and now I have a shiny new Daredevil in my hangar.
But I'm fairly new to EVE and I've only flown Gallente, really.
So, S&M regulars (... that sounds kind of wrong): show of your knowings!
What's a Daredevil good for? Where does it shine? And how should I fit it?

As all faction frigates, it's a PVP machine only. Apart from the obvious ego-boost role, naturally Maybe try this, it's a tight fit, but doable. What would you suggest? Pump up the armor buffer and drop the agility? I can't see anything else.

i don't want to be the buzzkill ... but in your case i'd sell it.
as you said yourself - you're quite new to the game and after looking at some of the killboards it doesn't seem like you got *any* (positive) experience in PvP.
considering the price-tag of the daredevil (110-120mio ISK) .. i'd rather sell it, and get myself a ****load of t1 frigs to learn the basics of PvP. ___________________

Did you check the contract market? They sell for $100 million isk each. It's good for expanding your wallet.

Nonsense the fit is awesome if you upgrade to faction everything and also go to Aridia and engage any Tempests lurking in belts because they are **** and die to faction-fitted frigates. Sig removed, inappropriate link. If you would like further details please mail [email protected] ~Saint |

I'd call that not so much a buzzkill as sound advice. :)
You're correct, my PvP experience is pretty much nil - I thought the Daredevil might have some other utility I hadn't spotted, since at my stage of game-development that's *way* too expensive a ship for PvP. It's easily the most expensive ship I own, right now.
Unless I get desperate for cash I might still hang onto it, though, because it's shiny and my first ever faction ship. :D I'm hoping to move to nullsec and take up PvP in a bit, but I'm already well on in building up my supplies for that.
Thank you though!

You have gallente and Minmatar frig skills, Sell that ship and buy 3 dramiels :))) Fit Autocannons in the high slots and then just randomly select stuff on your hangar and right click > fit to ship, its a dramiel so you should be ok. set orbit at 10km and engage everything you find. Don't forget to keep one for hangar spinning.

This is my prefered fit (NOTE: expensive)
[Daredevil, New Setup 1] Internal Force Field Array I Magnetic Field Stabilizer II Magnetic Field Stabilizer II Overdrive Injector System II
Catalyzed Cold-Gas I Arcjet Thrusters Caldari Navy Warp Scrambler Caldari Navy Stasis Webifier
150mm Railgun II, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge S 150mm Railgun II, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge S [empty high slot]
Small Algid Hybrid Administrations Unit I Small Hybrid Burst Aerator I Small Polycarbon Engine Housing I
Costs about 200mil to fit it and buy the ship. Ive only brought two of them and lost one (sold the other). Id fly it more if i had isk to **** away... but i dont! :D
Anyway stats: 5.5k/ms (7.9k overloaded) with my snakes, 218 dps not overloaded (257 overloaded). 4.2k ehp (bout same as a taranis).
Just overloaded web and scram, sit at like 8-9k and ****. Alot of other frigates fight at <1km and the ones outside of that dont do enough damage to really hurt you (not before dieing anyway). Keeping distance is quite easy due to 90% web and scram.
You could probably t2 fit it by dropping on of the magstabs for a Tracking enhancer or something... but that will gimp your damage abit.

Edited by: Diomidis on 24/05/2010 15:40:20 Don't bother with it unless you have a lot of Incursus -> and/or Taranis experience. This ship costs a lot of money and despite the impressive EFT stats dies easily to a lot of stuff out there - just like it kills a lot of stuff when you pick your targets correctly and handle them correctly.
Picking targets and facing their strengths / exploiting their weaknesses is something you cannot just read about in forums and learn. You have to lose a load of ships and kill even more to acquire that knowledge and confidence.
So either sell it and buy 10 T2 fitted T1 frigs to practice in (10 might not be enough), find some interesting videos of solo / small gang taranis/incursus pvp action and "study" them a bit, and when you've realized how easy you can lose it, get into a Daredevil and at least lose it in style. My PvP-learning plan involves a large pile of Rifters and another pile of Incursus hulls... and training up to Minmatar cruisers too and making use of a bunch of Vexor and Rupture hulls, possibly, because I've heard frigate PvP as being the closest EVE comes to "twitch gaming", and I tend to hate that in MMOs. (Australia generally seems to have slightly higher lag than other places, which really, really hurts in that sort of situation.)
If and when I start taking out ships as pricey as faction ships, I will definitely, I assure you, aim to lose them in style. My losses will be the stuff of legend.

Edited by: Ahz on 24/05/2010 17:58:28 Some ships are very effective against ships smaller than they are. Some ships are very effective against ships their same size. And some are most effective againsts ships bigger than they are.
The Daredevil is very effective against cruisers, destroyers and even battle cruisers. Particularly those with turrets.
Fit it like any frig: Guns, scram, nos. Maybe a dual prop setup with a MWD and AB.
Pick a target larger than yourself, set orbit to 5k so that you're inside its tracking speed, eat its drones and go to work on it.
Unless he's got great tracking bonuses, and neuts or nos you'll eventually take him down.
Edit: Just read all the advice to sell it and I agree to a certain extent. Flown wrong you'll just be handing someone a killboard cookie. But rather than sell it I'd suggest you hold onto it a while and fly it on Sisi. It's a good place to practice with a new ship and you'll very quickly learn what it can do and what it can't.

That is easily the best approach, try all 4, see what you like best, all the options you mentioned are very good.
Selling a Daredevil will buy you a nice stack of cheap T1 ships.

And then you only need to figure out how many more daredevils you have to sell to afford the fittings...
Spoiler: its about 12, and thats rather cheapish fittings.

True with blasters, wrong with rails.
DD can pin down anything at 15km and still do decent dps to kill it. At this distance you have more ehp and dps than the long range/speed fit crew and the close range crew can't hit you. DD is the one ship the FOTM Dramiel must avoid at all cost. -- 081014 : emoragequit, char transfered to a friend, 090317 : back to original owner blog |
