I suspect this is the appropriate forum as ships and fittings is for discussing balance and such.
I'm bored, if you are to please read and provide feedback.
I invite everyone who is Canadian or shares Canadian heritage to use this tag:
▌*▐
I take pleasure in finding creative and relevant names for my ships. As many others I have decided to follow a theme, some choose movies a certain actor was in, historical figures or sports cars. Me: I decided that all my ships would have cultural, natural and historical Canadian references. I would like to hear from others who do the same either with Canada or their own countries. I would also like feedback on my own ship names.
When I choose a ship name I try to take as many variables into account as possible; I believe that multiple meanings behind a name are what make it memorable and favorable. The variables I consider are as follows:
Ship race: Amarr: Religion Caldari: Birds Gallente: Insects and ? Minmatar: Canine, Norse lore
Ships original name
Ship type
Ship role
Ship importance: Cap vs BS vs Cruiser vs T2 vs T3
I try to find names from my nations history and culture that fit as many of these variables as possible. I find it interesting that many of these names would also be appropriate for Russian or Alaskan ships, but the ▌*▐ tag compensates for this. In my names anything northern or cold counts as Canadian :P
Finally I should note that I throw out logic and accuracy for awesomeness.
So without further delay here is a list of some of my favorite ship names remember; I want your feedback!
Tengu: ▌*▐ - Tundra Swan Tundra: I like Tundra because it is assoiated with desert areas, kind of unexplored-ish and thus W-Space-ish which is IMO the best place for a T3 Swan: T3 ships are "beautiful" in most ways besides looks, Caldari: Bird
Zephyr: ▌*▐ - Bluenose The Bluenose is a Canadian sail ship; need I say more?
Manticore: ▌*▐ - Snowy Owl Snowy: Canada Owl: Stealth, Caldari: Bird
Nemesis: ▌*▐ - Pine Beetle The pine beetle is an insidious insect that has invaded forests in western Canada
Falcon: ▌*▐ - Peregrine The Peregrin Falcon is a somewhat Canadian bird
Scorpion: ▌*▐ - Candu Aurora Candu: A Canadian designed nuclear reactor Aurora Borealis polar electromagnetic phenomena; Electronic Warfare I am not 100% happy with this name, anyone got suggestions and feedback for the Scorpion name?
Hyena: ▌*▐ - Husky Husky is a Canine typically found in northern regions.
Drake: ▌*▐ - Loon Loon is a bird (Caldari) featured on Canadian currency, it can also be used to refer to someone who is not of sound mind. My drake is fit with a DCU and an AB for tank, rest is gank.
Deimos: ▌*▐ - Niagra Niagra Falls, really big, impressive waterfalls half of which are in Canada. Blasters, massive overwhelming amounts of damage dealt quickly.
Firetail: ▌*▐ - Avro Arrow Really fast Canadian rocket plane.
I also have some names that don't yet have ships:
Maybe Loki or Dramiel? ▌*▐ - Okichitaw Native Canadian martial art. Anyone have a second word to add to this mane?
Minmatar Sniper Ship: ▌*▐ - Timber Wolf Timber Wolf: A Canadian sniper rifle, (wolf: Minmatar)
Caldari Assault Ship or Interceptor ▌*▐ - Snow Bird Canadian fighter plane (bird: caldari)
▌*▐ - Ice Lynx ▌*▐ - Beaver (IMO need second word to be awesome) ▌*▐ - Goose (IMO need second word to be awesome) CCRES is recruiting pilots who want to live in WSpace/Wormholes. Fill out an application here! |

Sounds like a bunch of Ubuntu distris if you ask me ;)
I name my ships after things from other games. Places races items whatever as long as I can see any similarity.

My own personal sense of whimsy which has led to such ship names as:
Goddess Wept (Hoarder) Harvester of Sorrows (Hulk) Silent Lucidity, Multitool, & Son of a ***** (Typhoons) Devil's Daughter (Thrasher) Romulus and Remus (A Wolf and a Jaguar) Bleeding Daylight (Maelstrom) Obstinate Refusal (Orca - lost to a very jovial bunch of guys in Solitude who were kind enough not to pop my pod afterwards - they also killed my first Loki - ahh, good times) --Vel

How about: "▌*▐ - Beaver Fever"?
It rhymes for extra awesome points and it hints at the male urge to seek out females for reproduction purposes. A common trait in beavers as well as otters.
And what about "▌*▐ - Strangle My Goose"?
This has a slightly violent cognation but it is excellent for a pvp ship. Help us to make parrots game related today! |

LOL
Well I'm not Canadian but my naming theme follows a certain pattern. Each ship is designated a certain registry, similar to Star Trek ships, I use "CBS" for Cerberus (Network) as that is my corp. The CBS is followed by a registry number, where the first digit defines the ship type:
9 or Letter - Unique ships 8 - Cov-Ops, Black-Ops 7 - Shuttle, Frigate 6 - Cruiser 5 - Battlecruiser 4 - Battleship, Mining Barges, Exhumers 3 - Freighters, Capitals 2 - Carriers, Super-Carriers 1 - Titans
In a few cases the "CBS" is replaced by "CX", if I'm testing a new fit or configuration.
After the first digit a random combination of numbers follows, making up the registry. A normal registry has 4 or 5 digits.
The name that follows can be anything, but in my case I like to name ships after my favorite Anime characters.

I just copy and paste my fitting into the ship name box so that people know how I'm fit - it's just the nice, polite Canadian thing to do.
But your idea is good too... ---------------------------------------------- I don't have an alt, but there's a main that would be upset if he heard me say that... |

Hmm what cool concepts here for ship names!
I'm not Canadian but I do have a... Kind of pattern I follow. I do what an above poster said with like in star trek, though for me it's "PCS ______" for "Pod Collective Ship" as my corp is called the pod collective.
I don't have a particular pattern for ship names though I'd like to come up with a pattern not dissimilar from what the US navy does (ie battleships after states or attack submarines after cities)
However I do use ship names that can either have multiple meanings, or, are unique sounding, or just fit the character of the ship.
PCS Spirit Incite (pronunciation can also sound like "spirit in sight") PCS Rubato (this is an italian word used in music, meaning basically to play the piece at your own discretion, your own constantly changing tempo, which while unorthodox, can connecnt more with an audience, etc etc) PCS Lachoneus (my dominix, named after a great leader that led troops into battle and such from a certain book I read a lot lol) PCS Crimson Zeal (just sounds cool IMO) But I digress. This one time at fat camp, i was flying a dominix, and then I was so hungry that i ate 3 planets and collapsed into a black hole, which ate my sig. |
