I don't understand tech 2 ammo... I'm using a legion that uses Heavy Pulse Laser II's for doing level 4 missions (my sandbox, don't judge me)
With Navy multi-frequency i do 339 dps, at 11+4.4
With Scorch I do 270 dps, at 32+4.4
(And even with Standard Multi-frequency it does 295 dps, at 11+4.4)
Now Immediately i say no thanks to it because of the less dps, not to even mention less tracking. And it has more range, which really doesn't matter considering the fact that my legion goes 639m/s, i get in range of anything i want in a matter of seconds (and again, missioning)

So can someone justify using scorch over Multi? I don't quite understand the benefit other than range (Sure, scorch will replace my Navy Infrared! yay!)

Consider the difference between shooting a target that is at 32km away right away vs. approaching at a velocity of 640m/s first to a range of 11km before firing first:
traveltime = 21000/640 = 32.8 seconds.
Damage output with scorch in 32.8 seconds = 32.8 * 270 = 8875 damage.
time to load MF/Scorch = 0 seconds.
Thus, we clearly see that, as scorch can be loaded instantly and has about three times the optimal of MF while maintaining ca. 80% of the damage of MF (using the numbers you give), there is no reason not to shoot at targets as you make the approach. Furthermore crystals take little cargo room and scorch is not that expensive, so those pose no real problems either. Of course, MF remains a suprior choice once the target in within something along the lines of 15km.

I just love using scorch, 36km sphere of death round my legion is nice :)

Just shoot them with Scorch as you move into range - nice for taking out frigates before they get close and get under your guns.
