Hello,I'm on an account about a week and a half old, I'm familiar with the basics of EVE, but I'm looking for a good ratting frig. I don't like ratting anything higher than 0.5, and I don't think I will head to null sec until I have a good fit.
The skills I have are pretty limited, I can only use T1 Mods except for a few T2s so please keep the fit to T1s. Also I would prefer to keep the ships Amarr, but if it is necessary, I'll create another toon to rat in that isn't Amarr.
If ratting with a frigate isn't possible give me a good alternative I'm willing to use a cruiser, but not a bc because I simply don't have the skills to use the mods.
The reason I would like to use a frigate are as follows -Fast ship means ratting is quicker -Fast ship means larger enemies, particularly those that pose a threat can't hit you up close. -Cheapest ship -Easy to fit -Punisher looks nice =P
Thanks for contributing (if you do).

Cruisers and battlecruisers use exactly the same mods!

Ratting in a frig in <0.5 is not something I would recommend. If you want to fly amarr I'd suggest an Arbitrator. It's a drone boat so you can fit it to tank to the max relying on your drones to do DPS. Maybe put some salvagers in high slots. Bring a Cloak if possible. Expect to die. A lot. Not from NPCs, but from players. Sol: A microwarp drive? In a battleship? Are you insane? They arenĘt built for this! Clear Skies - The Movie

I've ratted in .1 and .2 systems in an Atron and an Incursus (Gallente frigates). Its doable if the rats are also frigates, but if you encounter cruisers or BSs you will have trouble. I think you would have trouble breaking the tank of a BS even if you were able to establish a tight orbit. Normally I rat in a Vexor, which can handle all lowsec rat spawns up to 3 cruiser + 1 BS (the largest spawn I have seen to date in lowsec) I also take a flight of Hobgoblins and a flight of Hammerheads, essential for a Vexor.

Frigates will be very slow to kill rats and thus not very efficient money-wise. It also limits you to belt ratting. With something bigger, not only will you be able to kill the rats much faster, but you will be capable of doing cosmic anomalies which are safer (it's more time consuming for players to track you down) and can be more profitable.

Edited by: Ozanna leCureHardy on 26/05/2010 14:47:33 I've ratted in Syndicate in a Rifter. It's not very efficient, as Kahega says -- in fact, it's terrrrrrribly slow -- but it works.
You should look up bubble mechanics and learn to watch local, make safespots and use the directional scanner and third-party maps, all of which will help you survive.

Contrary to what somebody above wrote: the cruisers and battlecruiser rats won't be much trouble, since they can't hit you. The real problem will the frigates and especially the destroyer rats. Of course, ratting with a frigate is not time-effective.
Cruisers and battlecruisers use the same modules, so I don't know why you wouldn't want to use a BC. Lowsec is really designed for cruiser and BC ratting.
The only situation in which ratting in a frigate makes a lot of sense is if you're "stealth" ratting in hostile 0.0 where you expect to be attacked. And the frigate for the job is a stealth bomber. With good skills, good gear, and a target painter, a stealth bomber does as much damage as a mediocre battleship, with excellent range, and is almost immune to damage from BC/BS rats. It can fit a covert ops cloak and, though it doesn't kill rats as fast as a battleship, it's excellent for scanning the belts to pick out only the very most valuable rats to pick off. Watch out for the elite (warp scrambling) frigates and the destroyer rats, however.

Edited by: Toterra on 26/05/2010 16:48:48 Edited by: Toterra on 26/05/2010 16:45:05 I would recommend using a destroyer for low-sec ratting if you have low sp. I used to use a thrasher pretty effectively. It can easily kill BC and smaller rats. Plus with an AB it can get under a BS rat's guns and slowly pick away at it. Takes a lot of ammo but a thrasher can kill BS rat in about 2-3 minutes. Regrettably the Amarr destroyer may not work as well.

I am the poster to whom you are referring, what I meant was, yes, you can get close to a BS in, say, an Atron, and you won't be hit, but if he is repping at all you will never break a BS tank with 2 small blasters + 1 light drone. Disclaimer: I am new enough that I may well have missed some totally obvious tactic!

Well, you can rat in a frigate in lowsec, it's just difficult and you might need to run away from NPC's sometimes.
A cruiser is much more survivable.
I've ratted .3 in a Slasher and 0.0 Sanshas in a Vexor.
Not very efficient at all. Some rats take like 20 minutes to die.
You can do it for the challenge, but it's not a good way to earn iskies.
