I was part of the Operation Bad Moon fleet that got caught up in the fun. I've been spending most of this morning trying to work out what happened.
My Battle Report
Please tell me if I'm incorrect with anything and I can edit and update.
Anyway, despite the lag and the fact it was all a trap, it was an epic engagement and I'm glad I was there.

The event wasn't a trap. CCP failed to reinforce the node, and when the NC and Pandemic Legion jumped in for lols, everything pooped out. The lag and node crash was typical to most moderately-sized 0.0 engagments. Keep in mind that even larger 0.0 engagements have been recently fought, with worse lag.
I think this was the NC and PL having fun, and if you were surprised/angered by the lag, good. Epic fleet battles are generally not possible with the current version of EVE.

It was a kinda trap... we expected to go up against sansha... but not one sansha was in system... there was sansha chatter in local but only from sympathisers.

Incorrect. They merely picked it up from all the public channels where this was subject of discussion #1 for the entire day, as all the rest of EVE did. SparklesTheTranny > aeries will you marry me |

Didn't help that some of the biggest organizers for the "defense fleet" used much bulls**ty methods of getting folks interested by implying that they knew of the event before hand because CCP told them. And when they were questioned, they fell behind the screen of "trying to keep in IC" or "Operational intelligence", or remained quiet while others said "Look, does he really need to say that he got it from CCP?"
I'm somewhat ****ed because it really looks like a bunch of RPers decided to co-opt a legitimate event sequence from CCP and turn it into their own personal Charlie Foxtrot. Ah well, I'm glad that my alliance was at least smarter than me, and turned down the offer to participate. I will science you right in the face. |

Yes, because there's no precedent anywhere that shows that CCP encourages that sort of thing. . .
. . .and we obviously had never been told in character by the event actors that we should not just sit around and wait and should stage our own offensives periodically.
. . .obviously we were in the wrong here. :|

Thanks for that.
A couple of threads have confirmed my general view of what happened. In particular, this one.
The only thing I'm still not sure about is whether the 'defence fleet' leader roleplayers were aware that this was a trap, and not coordinated by CCP. In other words, whether they intentionally lead a fleet of wannabe titan-killers to their doom, or not.
I was, as some have put it, 'gullible' enough to think that CCP was going to be involved. But I plead ignorance, having not been involved in any other Live Events recently.

This is to a great part correct, after the long silence since the last attack (friday) Alot of folks wanted to believe something like that. Normally we doublecheck stuff, but now alot of people relied on folks who always had reliable intel, without checking themselves. Who is to blame? Nobody imo, once we arrived at the battlefield in Maut it became quite fast clear things were not right, and yet we enganged, with the main focus on taking down those who sided with Sansha's Nation, and then all hell erupted. What it foolish? No doubt. Did we have fun? Yes! And in the end that's what matters, Eve is a game, and we play games to enjoy ourselves.

Ayup, and that's the kicker. People are giving us a lot of crap OOC about it -- mostly because they got egg on their faces, but when it all comes down to it, it was fun. It was a good time. So who cares? Yes, we took you all for a ride, and yes, a lot of that happened because we got a little opportunistic because we knew you were all edging for something to happen for a DT event, so we played that up. What it came down to was we wanted to have a public hanging. And we did. And we expected all hell would break loose once it went down, and that was our goal.
Personally, I would hope that people wouldn't be so petty as to take it personally, but then again I was never really optimistic when it comes to people. ;)

just another example of how broken this game is when it comes to large fleet fights. Sad really, that even with a patch coming that not much was done to alleviate lag/instability like what was caused in this kind of fight. This is a perfect example of lag and instability caused daily out in null sec, and that is why we must operate on a completely different rule set for large fleet engagements. IE - Get there first because anyone trying to load the grid after a large fleet has already arrived will lag out and die without having ever loaded the grid. Edited by: Axemaster on 26/05/2010 17:41:29 The really big mistake our FC made was to have us all warp at 0km to the hostile cyno. I was one of the first to land, and it took a full minute to load the grid. Some never loaded it at all. There were probably 30+ carriers waiting for us, and we got slaughtered.
I don't know if the FC was aware that the node hadn't been reinforced. At the time, I figured that it had, and 600 people wouldn't produce unmanagable lag... in hindsight we should have warped in at like 200km, loaded grid, then attacked. I don't know if we would have done any damage, but we would have at least had a chance.
Also, look at my name - guess who got primaried first? |

I ALMOST DIED IN MAUT LAST NIGHT, you bastards!!!
...thank you for the single most hilarious, altogether fun hour of EVE I've ever had since I started playing. My own corp's hijinks don't get any better. I was proud to be there.
The OBM fleet organization was kinda fail, but whatever - it got me there. It was fun to watch. Hats off to all involved.

So, CCP encourages players to pretend they're in contact with CCP to fake events? CCP encourages players to crash nodes and cause system wide connection problems? What the heck kind of storytelling school is that? I don't mind so much that you sansha supporter types decided to trick someone into providing bad intel. As much as i try to avoid RP, it was good tactical strategy, and for that I applaud you. But that when it was passed along, it was done so in open channels? And then mouthpieced repeatedly? Honestly, i think i picked the wrong side of the fight. If only there were a pity quote i could- oh wait
Quote: evil will always triumph because good is dumb.
Course, if i'd known there were sansha supporters with an intel channel, i'd probably have gone with that from the word Go.
I really wonder if someone filled out the Massive fleet notification form. I will science you right in the face. |

I think one thing we can agree on is " ...hey, this doesn't feel right. " :-) Fantastic fun and you cant beat the feeling of warping in expecting one thing and then seeing .... something else. I can still feel my heart race when my "bad feeling" was confirmed by the sight of my entire overview filled with CAP ships. THere was not a reasonable sized target I could even find without scrolling WAY down. It was awesome! Where else could you find something like this? No where! Great stuff. Wether we were duped or not ... who cares! This was a very unique experience that will never happen the same way again ... fun in the sandbox. I am gonna go buy 2 more shovels and a bigger pail ... I like it here. "Spider ..... till the dawn." |

Originally by: ECHAeries Edited by: ECHAeries on 26/05/2010 10:10:23 PL did not shoot MM, PL was with NC as usual. All were shooting me and after I escaped them NC/PL started picking off other caps parties like USF had brought to the field. NC were merely there as oppertunists. If I truly was their target they are lucky that despite flawed intel I was even there, but then I should think they would've brought more HICs.
Nevertheless, nice attempt by everyone involved and it was great fun. That was an interesting surprise and that sort of tension every once in a while does keep the fun in EVE.
Edit: Oh and... yeah, good luck with those reimbursements because CCP "forgot" to RF the node. Answer for yourself this question: Has there been even one purple word in local? It was all was staged.
Confirming, USF & Friends had 4 fleets of 200+ in each fleet with only 160 (mostly capitals) jumping into LAG fest before CCP started spamming traffic advisories .....
Like ECH, we had fun as well. With the new insurance taking a dump on payouts for capitals no more than 16 hr from patch DT; what batter way to loose a capital then in fights that produce killmails like this.
Cheers, Zen
