........and damned if it doesn't look like the orbiting ship/structure/beetle-looking-thing above the planet is doing some sort of orbital bombardment.
Watch closely the animation. Something is being shot up from one location and being taken into the ship/structure/beetle-looking-thing, while the ship/structure/beetle-looking-thing is shooting something down to a different location............and that something clearly causes a flash/explosion.............
Is this a preview of orbital bombardment.....death from above....NUKE THE SITE FROM ORBIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's a customs office. It's where you send stuff up and down to the planet :)

Its the orbital customs station found around every planet and its firing supplies down to the surface, if you watch you should see stuff coming up.

Yes, yes, I see stuff coming up, but I also see stuff exploding down below in response to that thing shooting down something..............

Customs offices go both ways, the launches from the 'body' of the office are just inbound supplies >.>
Though, yeah, don't lose hope, one of the Dev's said that the lead developer is being pretty insistent about orbital bombardment being a part of PI's future.

Yes, because orbital bombardments normally suck something back up afterwards. ------

Oh child please. Don't try and defend by attempting to use real world devices in this game. If you are going to try down that road, then you will be forced to explain all of the other stupidity in the game like ships not continuing to accelerate, ships pitching and yawing in response to direction changes, ships stopping "on a dime" without massive retro propulsion............I could go on for days...............
And if you are going to say "eve isnt ships in space, its submarines in WD-40", then you've just invalidated your own response.
SOMETHING IS EXPLODING DOWN THERE, AND *I* WANNA BE THE ONE MAKING THE EXPLOSIONS!
DAMMIT!!!!!!!!

As it happens, I am an actual astronaut and I can confirm that space reacts exactly like EVE. We think it doesn't but really it is just like WD-40 and playing in a fish-tank or underwater. Anyway just like that.
Since you have put me on the spot, sonny, the differences I have found are...
1. In real life blasters actually hit the target because they were made better after the web nerf
2. Minmatar girls will do pretty-much anything.
3. Quafe tastes like ass* (* I know this because of 2. )

Dude.
I love that idea.
C&C had mind-controlled exploding cattle...........EvE could have mind-controlled pod pilots.
I'm drooling over the griefing possibilities...............

*** The big non-realistic part of EVE normal space flight is the part where you quickly slow to a stop when engines go off.
Actually some of the other stuff like pitching and yawing is more realistic than you think - IF you build a really cheap ass combat capable spaceship. The "no air in space" (therefore no pitch or yaw) spaceship actually needs to have equally powerful engines pointing in at least 6 opposing directions tomove equally well in all directions -- or you can be satisfied with really wide sloppy high speed turns if you have only one main engine and only retros pivot to a new vector.
The cheap combat ready compromise operates much like an airplane for direction changes and can change normal space direction while still accelerating with main drives.
The compromise? one primary axial engine set for overall speed and one set of main maneuvering jets (pitch up to new direction) pointing along a single direction perpendicular to the main axial drive -- plus retros to spin and stop spin (yaw/roll) of the actual direction of main maneuvering engine thrust.
Also separate warp behavior from normal space maneuvering -- warp drive is apparently a single drive system with zero maneuvering. I can see that reentering normal space might include some external braking forces. *Wink* You are just unhappy that CCP didn't throw in spectacular Cherenkov like radiation radiation displays. But for the combat oriented world of EVE I would bet suppressing such displays would rank pretty high on the research list. maybe that energy is partially reabsorbed - thus the absence of refueling requirements.
