I have new Macbook 13 inch with a good enough setup to allow me to play Eve and broswe the internet. However, while playing the game, doing ANYTHING else becomes practically undoable. And I KNOW my hardware supports is because in the Windows version I can easily do anything I wanted without so much as an issue.
Please, is there any way to stop Eve from being such an unnecessary resource hog?

Hi there,
I would suggest you submit a detailed bug report with as much information as possible so that we can investigate the issue.

One thing that helps is to open the solar system browser before switching out of eve. Helps me quite a bit.

I've had the same issue. I used Spaces with 6 virtual desktops. What helped me was using EVE and the other app at one Space. Switching to another Space caused serious desktop lag. Now I just open Safari or any other app directly ontop EVE. No problems so far.
Only dual boxing is still not possible. I filed a bug report already. -

Sorry to say that, but IMHO the fact that you advised the guy to submit a bug report is kinda scary. The problem he mentioned is very common, and I've seen it reported many times - even before Tyrannis. The system is completely unusable when the client is minimised, because of the slow down!
Have you CCP guys actually ever tried to play on MAC???

My best guess is that the fault of this error lies with cider, the wrapper CCP uses to run Eve on the mac. Because they write Eve for windows they need a wrapper like cider, if they wouldn't use cider they would need to completely rewrite Eve for mac.
It sucks but that's the way it is :(

Yes, this issue is long-standing. I run the client in 1600x1000 on last summer's MacBook Pro. When the client is not frontmost, other apps almost always become cripplingly slow. Safari rendering becomes snail-like, yet if you bring the client back to the front, Safari rendering goes back to normal.
I have had situations in Thunderbird where keystrokes are lagging 5-6 seconds. Quit the client, and all is well.
Yet the machine has no problems running two EVE clients, as long as all you want to do is play EVE. And it seems that some apps don't get hit by this problem, typically ones that don't do too much rendering.
Note in particular the current last message in this thread:
Originally by: Randy Taylor I have noticed this issue on my iMac 24" (OS 10.6.3). Oddly, it only seems to occur when the Eve window is completely blocked by another window (or windows). I usually run two Eve clients in windowed mode, one window partially hidden by another, plus the usual array of web/email/whatever, too. As long as at least part of both Eve windows is visible, there are no major slowdowns. As soon as an Eve window is completely covered by another window(s), it's slowmaggeddon. Moving the obscuring window so part of the Eve window is visible again removes the slowdown. It's not a problem, since I know the workaround, but it's interesting. I also see the issue with a single client in windowed mode. I guess the Eve client acts out against other programs if it can't be seen--like a 3-year-old, always has to be center of attention!
This is exactly how you reproduce this problem -- congrats to Randy for figuring out the precise circumstances. I have just tested it while typing in this very posting; with EVE partially visible on the screen, no real problems. But with EVE totally covered, 4-5 seconds lag per key, and spinlocks galore!

Further to this. I usually hit F10 before CMD-Tabbing out of EVE. Occasionally I forget and of course the interface is like molasses. Just discovered today after the younger son plugged in an iPod that by keeping iTunes active the fluidity returns to the interface... Clearly a conflict somewhere but nonetheless a workaround.

No kidding about the ridiculous lag that's continueing to be a pain in my side.
Back in the days of Apoc I could CMD-Tab and look at my PDF documents... browse my 15 tabbed browser (Firefox) check my 6 email accounts with mail and not even bat an eyelash.
Today... I'm eff'ing lucky to be able to open the damn window in Vent and switch channels before I die to lag.
They frakked up... big time...
I seriously doubt they even bother to test there own product anymore... its like we are there beta testers or some such.
Don't get me wrong... I'm not writing them off... but my next investment will be a new iMac and eve will be running in windows in bootcamp until they fix the freaking client.
It's insulting.
So yeah... your not alone in this.
Word of advise CCP... time for you guys to start paying attention to the details and hire more mac users to your QA Department... because each patch is exponentially making it worse.

PS: Yes I'm bitter... I miss the days of a happy mac user playing EVE. ========================= CEO of Shadow Cadre http://www.shadowcadre.com ========================= |

Yeah, its not fair to say, that there is a mac client, but there is only a bad port that emulates the windows client. Noone really cares about this client and the users are not happy. Pleas make a native client or get the actual client to work fine.
The client in this state is really frustrating!

According to CCP in another thread on this very section of the forums... running the Mac client in a window is not a supported configuration. Apparently never was, never will be. Even though Transgaming demo'd it running four clients in windowed mode on an imac.
