Edited by: Tiffy Mezzier on 29/05/2010 21:46:30 I'm interested in getting some discussion going about the game's camera and some suggestions to improve it.
Mainly, my concern is the way that the camera portrays scale. Problem being that it doesn't. Even frigates in EVE are massive vessels, for example a Rifter is roughly the size of a Boeing 747 jetliner.
(check out these videos if you want to see what the true scale of these vessels looks like in person, in Crysis Engine, and in Source Engine)
There are two major flaws in EVE's camera design that lead to ships looking like tiny bathtoys instead of the gargantuan war machines they are:
1) Camera viewing angle: The way that EVE's camera is always anchored to an invisible tether around the object being viewed is something that could be approached better.
This isn't a very clear explanation of the problem so I'll have to rely on a clear explanation of the solution. Instead of the current tether system, the camera could basically free-float within a sphere based around your ship.
The camera controls would be WASD, like using fly mode in a first person shooter, and the camera could be collision enabled. Additional controls might lock the camera's position relative to your ships orientation, or toggle back and forth between the old and proposed camera system. This would let you do cool things like fly down to get a view from the surface of your ship, or set up your own chase camera...
2) Camera field-of-view: The field of view for a human being, is nearly 180 degrees, the current field of view for EVE's camera if I had to guess, would be somewhere in the range of 90-120 degrees. This makes for a very flat perspective, and a lot of lackluster when viewing things from angles.
The solution would be to increase the viewing angle, in essence applying a reversed fish-eye effect. What this does, is make things closer to the center of the viewing area appear farther away, and things towards the edges appear closer. This style of camera effect is very good at creating extreme perspectives, and creating the illusion of massive scale.

honestly one of the worst things about eve is the ships are so small in appearance.. I really think I would enjoy my ships alot more if we had atleast the first option so we can see the immense scale of our ships.. im still wanting missle turret points, better animations for all weapons, weapons hitting more places on enemy ship, and alot of other very tiny graphic tweaks would make this game alot more pleasant.

Anything that makes the ships look bigger and grander gets a +1 from me.

Cool, good to see people agree with me. I think its really important that the camera be updated. Especially now that every other visual aspect of EVE has been getting attention.
