There's been far too much speculation about the Industry Index system, so I decided to write up a guide explaining everything. I will do my best to answer any questions in this thread as best I can.

Incredibly awesome report. I haven't mined ore in forever, but have always been curious about how the industry levels worked. Thanks ;)

wonderful explanation of some of the breakdowns.
sadly this brings up the 2 sad sad discussions i have had with other miners...
1 - either CCP does not understand the mining and production professions, or they have a vision that they have not shared and no one else understands
2 - if only they could replace that spod rock that taunts us with a scordite of the same volume live would be MUCH MUCH better.
the perma-camping of the mining systems was the reason i decided to leave nulsec myself. we (myself and others with me) found the cost/benefit ration of a mining op to not be viable with cloakers in system due to the loss of income attributed to the guards.
once again though ,
nice write up and keep the bumps for this

Excellent work with that writeup. It pretty much highlights the problem with the system and how it has done nothing to improve the aspect of actually living with a 0.0 based industry, which is nowhere near viable unless all you build are cruisers.

Excellent report :)
A question: So its actually cubic meters and not units mined that affects the industry level? Before this report, I was under the impression that it was units mined that went towards industry level, not cubic meters...

It is absolutely cubic meters mined. There is no doubt in my mind at all. Since miners pull up a set volume with each cycle (because ores are different volumes each, they pull up different amounts of different ores), it doesn't matter what ore you're mining, just so long as you're mining. All the rumors about needing to eat veldspar instead of ABC are a lie. It's just pure m3 that matters, and that's the same yield no matter what you're mining.
That being said, ice mining yields about half of what ore does in volume. And mercoxit is less than ore in m3 as well. We do not believe planetary mining will effect industry standing, but we're not sure

I concur with the m3 mined. The 250k (4m m3) unit spod rock will boost the index farther than 250k (25,000 m3) units of Veldspar.

I think this is a very well thought out nicely done collection of information.
It's nice knowing that there's someone out there that cares enough about us carebear's to put something like this together, CCP I urge you to take a long hard look at what exactly is mentioned in this and improve on the systems a little bit.

Bumping this for readers in the post PI rush. We're also pretty sure that belt respawn is on a 4-day timer, not the 3-day timer that is commonly believed. This changes a few numbers for mining rates in the report, but the conclusions and strategy sections are still valid.

Nice report.
As a predominantly non-mining Alliance, we had wondered what it would take to improve an industrial index. This spells out exactly what would be required and gives everyone something to base decisions on.
Unfortunately the resulting exploration opportunities count for nothing towards maintaining the index. We always knew this to be the case, but now at least we know how much mining would be required to maintain an index for those that want to explore.

Excellent and concise reporting. Speaking as someone in the engineering world, I wish we could see more work like this in real life. :) A side note I was wondering. Has anyone looked into what it takes from a Mini-Profession aspect of raising the Industry index? From my perspective, I believe that CCP made a bit of a mistake with putting the mini-professions in with the industry and not with the Military or even forming a separate category and putting the wormholes and mini-profession sites together. I personally love to run them and short of having a mining system its not really possible to upgrade them.

We haven't investigated exploration and hacking type sites and how much they contribute. My guess is that they spawn so far and in between, and contribute so little, that we won't be able to judge any contribution at all. Same story for PI contributions (which I doubt there are any) --------------------------- Full Explanation of the Industry Index System |

Wow this PDF file is exactly what I was trying to do last time I was playing Eve-Online in a "full-scale" attempt to calculate the belt levels and roid spawn stats.
This is amazing man, thanks!!!
I will donate to you as soon as I get all my accounts reactivated, this is really good information.
The Spod roid was also in a thread last week here, same guy? Or is this the way this level of belt spawns? Always a big Spod?
Well, I am half way through reading this PDF and I just wanted to say great job mate!

Just curious, have you ever seen the +5 and +10% versions of roids in a level 5 system? I really haven't seen the different versions in the hidden belts.

Well, I finished reading it and now I can admit that I have learned something :) Thanks.
Would I be correct to assume that this method of leveling up belts can also be applied to Gravimeteric Signatures within Wormhole Space? Say for example, a class 2 WH.

The spod asteroid is static in the small belt, it will always be there in each belt. These asteroid belts don't change at all.

Only systems with an ihub and sovereignty can be upgraded. Thus WHs will not be upgraded by continuous use

We've never seen any of the +5% or +10% variations in these hidden belts. Occasionally you'll see true grav sites (the original hidden belts - not the sov upgraded belts) and those will have +5% and +10% ores. But that's independent of system upgrades. --------------------------- Full Explanation of the Industry Index System |
