Hey Guys,
I'm sure its on here if i search a little more but just figured i would ask the community what their experience on Linux is? I am considering moving from Windows 7 to either Fedora or Ubuntu on my main PC and wanted to get an idea of what to expect (Any common issues / heads up from the community).

Edited by: mrkaczor on 03/06/2010 19:06:57 It works for me ... but as I have seen here - little Linux knowledge (use console and think) is essential to run EVE on it - you need to know what you are doing. In most cases - Nvidia works better, second Ubuntu has more users so will be easier with help.

EVE performance is fine, and I regularly run two EVE clients. Switching virtual desktops is much, MUCH smoother than alt-tabbing on any Windows machine I've used. Initial setup, patching, and system updates are a LOT more work than Windows.

A Linux novice installing his first distro will need to get a few things explained.
Everyone else who has some Linux knowledge will have little difficulties making EVE run under Linux. It is just getting the source code, having all the necessary packages of your distro installed, compiling it and installing it. Then run it.
This is how it is for me. --

Debian Lenny 5.04 with Catalyst 10.5 and Wine 1.1.42 here and running Eve in a window. Optimised for quality and everything works really good actually. Gate animations and mining lasers give a bit of a frame drop but except for that I can't complain about anything. Works as good under linux as it did when I ran it under windows xp.

Expect to do a lot of asking questions in the beginning, and stack up on patience... first couple of weeks may be frustrating, but you may just start to love Linux after a while .. :)

Switching from Windows to Linux is very hard ... but opposite - it's impossible :)

Is the Eve client only supported using Wine now?

Short answer: yep. But that's not a bad thing tbh. The wine implementation has almost ALWAYS been better than ccp's stab at a 'native client'.
Cedega or Crossover also work. (I don't recommend Cedega though.)

Wow, Thanks for the heads up guys! I got Fedora installed on the computer and am attempting to get EVE running tonight. I am new to Linux but am ramping up steadily. Problems don't bother me as I'm a tech at heart so solving them are going to be exciting (Until I rip my hair out) lol.
I'll probably come back here and ask the experts if I run into any difficulties.
In short going on a few days now, I LOVE LINUX!!!! <---- Caps lock is cruse control for cool, you know Rulez of the interwebs and all. :)
