Hi,
I've never used linux before and now due to a major failure on my machine (I'm on my missus machine) I need to use linux to get back up and running.
Eve is the only game I play so linux looks the way to go but I'm unsure what version to get. Ubuntu looks to be the most noob friendly but do I go for 10.04 or 9.10 or something completely different, like mint?
Considering I've not used linux (not sure what to do about a browser or mail program either) would someone be kind enough to offer some (a) suggestion on what would be good for a complete noob to use?

Both of them are fairly easy to use...if you want only play may be better Mint.

Ubuntu 10.04 is the best for beginners, but you will probably get frustrated if you have never used Linux before. If you manage to get past the initial frustrations, you will probably start to love it though. :)
Its always hard to not know anything and start from scratch, whatever it is. But it expands your knowledge. :)

I've gone with Ubuntu 10.04
It's been very interesting so far and I can't believe how much I've read in the last couple of days. Almost got eve working now, I think.

I'm a Red Hat / Fedora guy, myself (and everyone at work are Debian people, so I get no end of ****. ), but I agree with everyone else that Ubuntu is kind of "easy-mode" Linux; it endeavors to be the best, easiest, fastest to setup, as a Windows replacement.
However, as you get the hang of it, if you're going to be running multiple clients you may want to look into lighter-weight remixes of Ubuntu. Specifically, Xubuntu or Lubuntu (Is that the LXDE version?), which use XFCE and LXDE respectively. Both of those are much lighter-weight windows managers than Gnome, the default Ubuntu window manager. Using those may sacrifice some eye candy, but it will free up resources to hopefully speed up the Eve clients.
Generally, though, replacing your window manager may be a bit tricky. But I've always been a fan of breaking things in order to find out better how they work. ;)

For a mail program I'd recommend thunder bird from the makers of firefox it works flawlessly for any mail server I've used. Distribution wise I won't give my two tidbits on other distribution... hehe
