I am new to indy/R&D, and I would like to keep building my new char to have lvl 4 R&D agents and for PI and invention.
How do I go about choosing an R&D agent right fresh off the boat (as in brand new character). Do I just find one with the best quality and start doing missions? What is the difference in doing missions and actually doing R&D - what exactly does it mean to actually do R&D versus a mission for an R&D agent?
Thanks a ton. Xuki/The Cleansing/Op2 |

This is a good place to start.

To choose an R&D agent, find the R&D agents that are the most profitable. Now grind up standings with their corporation through their usual mission agents. Once you have the appropriate standings, you'll be able to talk to the agent and start researching.
With Research Project Management trained to 5 you'll be able to talk to 6 R&D agents.
The rest of your questions are answered by the Research Agent guide in the EVElopedia. [Aussie players: join ANZAC channel] |

That is the min/max way to choose an agent. I chose mine based upon which datacores I wanted to use. Yes, it is more ISK effective to only research the max profit datacores. Just saying that not everyone cares to do it that way.
Anyway, eve-agents.com is also a good resource.

Thanks so much for these replies - helps a ton. However, I find that all the agents available in the universe to my new toon have between 0 and -18 quality. How can I raise the quality of agents available? Do I have to grind rep with that faction by doing missions for an agent and then start all over with a new agent of better quality and rinse repeat for a million years until I can get quality 20 agents, and only then raise them to level 4 and repeat the max of 6 times - should I also just quit now, because that sounds ridiculous.
Where am I going wrong? Xuki/The Cleansing/Op2 |

Urm. Not sure if I'm reading you right. Quality is not something you raise separately from agent level. You grind standings with the corp that has the R&D agents you're interested in using, and eventually you'll have high enough standings with that corp to use L4 Q20 agents. You can do that 6 times if you really want to, to get the maximum quality research agent in 6 different corps, or you can just do the grind once and use the 6 highest quality research agents for that one corp. The latter option gives you fewer datacores but it's 1/6 the initial grind. |
