Does anyone at CCP know what they're doing?

Zeta Zhul Caldari	Posted - 2010.06.05 16:25:00 - [1] sigh. Ok. Decided to log onto test server to check. Had to download patch, downloaded patch, applied patch ... patch failed. Recovery process began, processed, completed. So far so good. Logged onto test server, checked in, everything seems ok at first glance. Logged out because I don't have time right now to do a full on test. ... Logged onto Tranq version of client ... ended up on test server. WTF!? Logged out, logged into using my Tranq client shortcut again ... ended up on test server. The patch repair process doesn't seem to make the distinction between a client version dedicated to the test server and a client version dedicated to Tranq. sigh. ----- place witty signature line here

I had an instance of patching my main folder after having difficulties with patching my Sisi folder. And I'm pretty sure I did NOT point the sisi installer to my main folder, as well. I think the repairer thingy simply does not ask for where to be installed but rather takes your default installation. Couldn't reproduce it since I did not get any errors with installing sisi patches, since.

From a professional programmer POV I can tell you that somewhere in the bowels of CCP there's a clueless programmer whining "Why the hell would anybody have TWO copies of the client??". IMO I lucked out that both Sisi and Tranq are currently in sync with each other. Otherwise it's the 2+gb download to recreate the Tranq client. ----- place witty signature line here
Terrax Norik	Posted - 2010.06.07 19:09:00 - [8] I've noticed that if you are using an incremental update from TQ it will default to auto-detecting your path and patch your TQ folder. You really have to watch what you are clicking "OK" to. Sometimes it says something along the lines of "your build in path <TQ-path> doesn't match, would you like to choose another location?" And sometimes it will auto-detect and ask "would you like to patch <TQ-path>?" It seems like there has been a change in the logic of the patcher in the last year or so, but I'm not sure when that happened. I've actually updated my TQ folder a lot more by mistake in the last year than the previous years combined, I think. No harm since I always copy off a backup in case the patch goes bad.

When you installed the sisi update, it overwrote your tranq shortcut. Stop using the default shortcuts. Create your own shortcuts with unique names to the executable file as Gnulpie indicated above if you intend to maintain both a test and live client on one computer. Also, your choice of thread subject is lulz in consideration of the issue.

Hardly. This is a game and nothing that important. What irritates me is the bad design, bad programming, bad systems and bad management. Idiotic UI bugs in a desktop application that's matured over the course of years doesn't give me a lot of confidence. 3. Blah blah blah. You folks don't quite get it do you? To me that would be no big deal since I download the entire client in less than 5 minutes, but if you have a slower connection it could become VERY annoying if you had to do that a little now and then. My issue is that in updating the Sisi client the update program didn't make a distinction between the Tranq & Sisi client. Once it got into repair mode it just started indiscriminately updating. 4. But it's irritating that I actually have to on a regular basis. What is the point of an automated update process, something that many other dev teams and individual developers have gotten right, if you're constantly having to download the full install? 5.
