I havent made much from pvping; I am also far from a solo pvp god. Im pretty picky about targets, and dont lose ships often. I fly mostly frigs at this point.
Do i make more than i lose in SHIPS? Yes.
Do i make enough to cover new skillbooks, shiny goodies, etc? No. Its close, but so far, I am slowly losing isk.
You shouldnt go broke overnight, and if youre good, you can make decent isk. But yeah, even mining is probably faster. You can supplement your pvp income with PVE activities (or an alt, ofc) if you wish.
The odd ransom helps a LOT, wish more people would pay up.

Doing it in a t1 frig is easy and profitable, however you'll really only make enough isk to keep you flying t1 frigs. Your targets are just too few, too far between and not very valuable. If you really wanna go this route, or start by this route, inties are fantastic targets which are easy to kill and typically t2 fit. The only other real possible targets are other frigs, and if they're t1 fit you get almost no profit while if they're t2 fit they'll typically kill you.
I've taken out a ferox in a T1 punisher with autocannons before. He had a craptastic fit with almost no tank, but still...

Probably the most effective way is to start a corporation dedicated to piracy, since thats basically what you are asking.
This way you can war-dec other entry level corporations and ransom all their players or the corporation for a lump sum.
It will also give you more options to fight in empire since you will be able to attack them anywhere.
Just keep in mind they might higher another corporation to provide security and thats when it get interesting.
