I'm fairly new to Eve (about 1 month). Currently flying a Brutix, and I'm having problems on level 3 deadspace missions.
Usually I set up for long range, with 6 250mm rails, and a 150 mm rail in the last slot. I prefer long range combat. But in deadspace, I can't dictate range, and frequently get overwhelmed by 20 - 30,000 isk frigates. They get in too close too quickly for me to kill them all, and I don't have the weaponry to take them out when they orbit at 5 - 10Km.
I have drones to lvl 4, but 4 light or medium drones are next to useless. Would 5 heavy drones deal with 2 - 3 fast frigates quickly at close range? How well would heavy missiles work against the frigates?
Basically I can either train my drone skills up now and continue with the Brutix, or train Caldari frigate/cruiser and switch to a Ferox (which might suit me better as a long range setup).
So which will deal better with small fast enemies at close range, without sacrificing too much of the long range armament? Heavy missiles, light missiles, or heavy drones?

Missiles work really well against frigates, but so does drones. I suggest you fill the Brutix with several medium drones of the faster type (Such as Valkyrie), and sacrifice a med slot for a web if your drones have trouble hitting.
Just remember not to launch drones too early! Otherwise the little raties will kill your drones.

Missiles work really well against frigates, but so does drones. I suggest you fill the Brutix with several medium drones of the faster type (Such as Valkyrie), and sacrifice a med slot for a web if your drones have trouble hitting.
Just remember not to launch drones too early! Otherwise the little raties will kill your drones.

Heavy drones.
I do lvl 3 missions and my heavies can do the mission by themselves as long as I make sure to not let them get shot.
But being able to send a cruise after the occasional inty rat is very nice.

I'm on the same page with both of these guys. I use a thorax with 8 heavies and tanked with a 1600mm rolled tungsten plate + hardeners. With this setup, I can tank almost everything the game throws at me for lvl3 missions while my drones do all the work. Of course the guns help on the BIG MAMA's, but the drones are the ones that kick much ass.
Web + drones do indeed rock. Heavy missles plus web rocks too. So carry a webber dude. Oh yea, and also, a one month old char would have a hard time having the skills to be able to tank the dmg the 30k inty rats deal, so in time, you would have less problems just by getting the right skills. Also, having the right hardeners equipped according to the npc dmg type helps a lot with sustaining your armor/shields.
