So I'm looking for more opportunities for pvp, and everyone is telling me go to lowsec. Apparently there are fights to be had in belts, hunting ratters, and hunting pirates that are hunting ratters (all of which tells me ratting in lowsec can't be a good idea).
Anyway, what's the deal with piracy exactly? Is it considered piracy just looking for fights in lowsec? It seems like a lot of people consider piracy to be dishonorable or whatever. I am just looking for some fun fights, but I don't want to close any doors by becoming a "pirate".

Being a Pirate can have many different conotations.
For some, a pirate is only someone who soley plays eve for PvP and happens to have so bad of a security standing that they cannot travel in hi sec.
Others view pirates as those who constantly prey on other players, with no regard to someone's sec status.
However, I have yet to hear of any corp or alliance that would look at someone's kills, see a few people in low sec, and close doors for that person. In other words... so long as you don't go below a -2 sec status, you should be fine. Below -2, you can't go into 1.0 security systems. Below -2.5 and you can't go to .9 sec systems. But really, a few kills in low sec shouldn't lower your sec status this bad unless you also pod the pilot of every ship you kill.

Edited by: Owen Drakkar on 08/06/2010 16:43:57 Worth mentioning that you will take less of a sec hit dependent on the sec rating of a low sec system too. For example killing a players rifter in 0.1 would not dmg my sec as much as if it was in 0.4. Helpful if you're trying to watch it.

PVP in low-sec is alot of fun. I have been doing in the past 2-3 month's, i have had good fights in low-sec. I can't play as much as i want to but most of the times when i go to low-sec i can find a fight.
And yes, the sec status hit is less when you kill someone in 0.1 than in 0.4.
But beware of hard core pirates, i see a lot of pirates in low sec who have -10.0 sec status, beware of these people. Constantly check local and directional scanner, and you should be good to go :)

Piracy is more of a state of mind in EVE.
You've high-sec forms of piracy which include suicide ganks for profit on mission runners, miners and the like. There are also forms of extortion, ore theft and things of that nature.
In low-sec you've a lot of spacelane piracy where a group can lock down a stargate to prevent free travel through low security systems. Then like you've mentioned, hunting others for profit in the belts or other areas.
Just blowing up things in low sec does not make someone a pirate.

If you are looking for a good fight why would you avoid someone that is -10?

If you engage in enough low-sec PVP, you'll find yourself viewing a player with a -10 security status as a potential "free kill" as you will not take a security hit for attacking them.
Learn to use directional scan well. And get some friends, because 'the other guy' will have some too.

I wish someone from VETO would chime in. I think they might have a better take on what a "pirate" is within the context of this game.

If you just want to get into lots of fights join RvB. Piracy has a number of consequences in the game in that you have to deal with like either losing access to hi sec or spending lots of time maintaining your security status by ratting.

I've the same problem. My corp settled in a nice quiet low sec system recently. Our main motivation was easy and fast PvP - right on the doorstep.
But in addition to that we want to do some exploration and some low sec missions here. Overall this low sec area shall become our home. So nice neighborship is essential.
Problem: suddently I hesitate to attack pilots in that system.
@Op: What could help a bit maybe...we've a rough rule in PvP: we don't attack ships which are not able to fight back. So no haulers or miners. We don't scan down mission runners as well. -

Find out who are the other corps living in your area, decide if you want to wage war against them, or with them. Politics are important in residing in low sec too. The systems are "owned" by corps in low sec too.

If you want to pvp in low-sec without worrying about sec hits you could consider joining one of the Faction War militias/corps. -----------------------------

If you aren't a pirate already, you'll never be one. Just like with most other aspects of EVE.

Pretty much like everyone else said:
∞General PvP (ie. smaller gang) is eaiest to find in low sec, but unless you're selective you will drop your sec status in a hurry. ∞Selective PvP (ie. hunting pirates or merc) is also relatively easy in low sec (outside of empire there is no distinction between pilot and pirate.) ∞FW offers watered-down PvP in low sec with some lucrative monetary rewards. ∞Summary: There are lots of pvp opportunities, but yes, if you frequently skirmish in low sec you will recieve the pirate sec status even if you are not one in practice(obvious exceptions if you run FW). If you're a daring individual, head to NPC null space (Syndicate for example), and pvp out there. I get 1v1, 3v3, and many small gang encounters in these areas a lot when I visit. That said, I cast away my inhibitions and went full pirate (-10 sec status, as any real pirate has) years ago and I spend about 90% of my time terrorizing a few low-sec regions.
