Apparently a lot of thought and work is about to be invested in revamping POS's and how they work, as discussed during the Alliance Tournament today. There was even talk of being able to anchor them in groups, with more than one per moon (or perhaps in other places as well).
While they are redoing it from pretty much the ground up, should they look into the possibility of dead space POS's?
By that I mean to give players the means to scan out "dead space pockets", warp near them, and construct an acceleration gate that will warp you into the pocket.
You then place a beacon for the acceleration gate to lock onto inside the pocket so that you land in the same place each time.
You then build your spiffy new personalized POS complex as discussed.
It would be up to you how far you placed the beacon from your POS. Place it close for ease of use, or at the optimal range of your defensive guns, or perhaps if the pocket is big enough you place it over 150km away so that you can warp from the landing beacon to one of the POS's (if more than one is in the pocket).
Think of the defensive possibilities. Nobody could warp or cyno directly to your POS, they would be drawn to the acceleration gate instead as they are in missions now. You would always know where hostiles are going to land and the beacon has a nasty habit of decloaking (albeit only until they move away) any stealthy vessels trying to enter. Of course, you'd be subject to those same restrictions as well.
There could be different types and sizes of dead space pockets, perhaps with their own unique effects (somewhat like some WH systems, but unique to dead space pockets).
Perhaps access to your POS's could be temporarily cut off by destroying the acceleration gate (until it is replaced by you or a hostile entity).
Perhaps the beacon could be destroyed (with a bit of effort) by an enemy that wishes his entry point to be random in the pocket.... although it might be random for each ship.
There might even be resources specific to some pockets that could be harvested, like gas clouds or large ancient battlefields full of wrecks.
I think this would add a whole new area to the game "within" the current game.
But the important question is, what do you think? Should this be explored while the system is being redesigned? Would you be interested? To carve a successful niche for yourself in EVE you need to be able to out sell, out produce, out fight,-á out run, or out wit your competitors. If you can do none of the above, your only option is to complain on the forums that somehow you are at a disadvantage using the exact same tool set-áas the rest of the player base. |
