Edited by: Ella C''Tronix on 09/06/2010 04:53:10 I read all the guides, did all the research and set out this morning to try out this PI thing. I trained all skills up to IV except for CCs which are still forthcoming (currently III) and one of the scanning things is at V I think.
With all the costs of setup, skillbooks and everything involved, mathematics tell me it will take approximately *48 real life years* to recoup the cost of the investment.
Oh well. Cool interface/toy. Hopefully it gets fixed. I guess I'll just keep producing products and stash them until a time when they're more profitable and/or I'm better equipped or on better planets.
It's worth noting, however, that I was just using the best planets in highsec in familiar regions. I'm sure you can do stuff in "real" space and setup profitable reaction chains.
PS - This is the combined efforts of two accounts with identical skills for PI purposes.
Oh, and I almost forgot. I just made you read my signature. |

Edited by: LabSlotz on 09/06/2010 04:59:03 strange... what are you making?
my math shows me that just one of my highsec planets will net close to 7 mil/month (edit: AT the current market value, which will probably increase when the NPC supply dries up) at the 96 hour cycle (almost hands off). that more than pays off the cost of the main skills and the CC (the main skills being upgrades and consolidation. i feel sorry for the morons that trained the hell out of the next to useless scanning skills.)
i smell a troll.

I don't really see how without injecting it with offplanet materials, which is what i'm trying to avoid. I want passive income, and thought that's what PI was all about.
I was trying to make various midlevel commodities that I used to buy and sell already, guidance systems for example. Maybe my planets just suck but the resources they say they have don't show up on the heatmap sometimes, regardless of sensitivity and my skills, and i'm left working with whatever is there. But that's besides the point.

lol, when isn't he.
When did eve become such an obsessive game, as the devs have said, you don't need to role play per se as the game just kinda absorbs you. I mean seriously, a bunch of adults getting freaky over a virtual world is odd.
Gone are the days where fun, now they just take massive chunks out of your life and leave you feeling used

Perhaps that's where the benefit of Advanced Planetology comes into it - even with the faintest traces present, I can find it if I set the sliders low.
There are some things you can make without having to ship interplanetary, but I suspect - for that very reason - they may end up less valuable than things which require more logistics.

They're up to IV, I have a hard time imagining how different V would be, but when I can spare the training time I will pick it up just to find out.

I calculated 41 days for my initial operations, if I sold things at current prices.
Prices will change dramatically when NPC orders are gone...

I got between 50m3 and 90m3 over night of what I guess is p2 product that has a value of about 500isk / 1.5m3. We are talking about petty cash here. I doubt I will get my 30 mill back any time soon.

Speaking of mistakes, mine was that I didn't realize that for pure factory planets minimizing the planets radius is the primary factor due to the link cost. CCP normalizes the planet view so that all planets are visualized as the same size regardless of actual size yet the minimum distance between installations is based on this normalized projection hence if you pack two installations a minimum distance from each other the link cost may still be high since the _ACTUAL_ distance between them is great. This can make a great difference in terms of profitability especially on low-margin high sec planets.

Holy crap. I never even thought about that! Some planets, like lava i just gotta suck up the size. But barren and gas planets...wow.
Its amazing how deep this game really can be.

Theres your problem, "It's worth noting, however, that I was just using the best planets in highsec in familiar regions" .
You have answered your own gripe " I'm sure you can do stuff in "real" space and setup profitable reaction chains".
Eve would die in the blink of an eye if you could make megabucks in hi-sec....it aint happening, so get into 0.0 and die a little

Your Market Model is obviously wrong. Myself, I'm producing Livestock to provide Goats for our Northern CareBears. See, my alliance requires you to have the approved fittings to get reimbursed for losses. Now all I gotta do is get Goats added to the approved fittings list, and I'm gonna corner the market!
I predict return on investment in less than a month.

They need to take the NPC buy orders off the market, or change them to 1/10th the price, or make the price drop by 10% each day.
(NPC sell orders need to get the axe as well.)

why did you guys think a feature with no barrier for entry at all would be profitable? Anyone an their mothers can make PI stuff on all of his characters for basically nothing, why do you think the stuff produced would be valuable unless there is an artificial price holder like NPC buy orders

I have made a ton of profit already from PI!
What I did was buy up a ton of Standard CCs from the nearest available system (12 jumps away @ 1.6mill each) and sell them in my home system for 3 mill each.

When you day "fixed", do you mean make it so you make 100 million a day with PI? PI has a bigger purpose than just another carebear money making venture. Level 4's?
So if you think that then yea you better go back to your little production thingy.

Nope, I was merely hoping it'd be a low profit margin passive source of income that would trickle in and maybe pay for a few cheap fit pvp replacements over the course of a month AT MOST.

sorry but i don't get how to make a lot of money with PI. Even with NPC orders still in place. For a short example lets take Oxygen. It takes 3000 noble gas to make 20 oxygen. cheapest noble gas i could found was 4 .4 ISK and that was a real small amount but lets take it. 3000x4 = 12.000 ISK / 20 makes 600 ISK per Oxygen. When i look how much 1 oxygen costs now then how someone can even make money with PI ?
