I'm in a C2. I'm really only gonna do POS fuel to start. I'm used to living in w-space. It doesn't seem especially risky to me. I use a Bustard to move stuff in the system, and it is very durable with a built-in +2 warp-stab.
I have 4 characters with all skills trained to level 4 (so an Advanced Command Center), but so far only five colonies. Using the 95 hour resource time (1 hour extractor cycle time).
Planet 1 (Plasma) * 6056/hr: 6000 Noble Metals -> 40 Precious Metals * 6529/hr: 6000 Heavy Metals -> 40 Toxic Metals * 40 Precious Metals + 40 Toxic Metals -> 5 Enriched Uranium
Planet 3 (Lava) * 6403/hr: 6000 Non-CS Crystals -> 40 Chiral Structures * 7779/hr: 6000 Heavy Metals -> 40 Toxic Metals * 40 Chiral Structures + 40 Toxic Metals -> 5 Consumer Electronics
Planet 4 (Barren) * 7425/hr: 6000 Noble Metals -> 40 Precious Metals * 6094/hr: 6000 Base Metals -> 40 Reactive Metals * 40 Precious Metals + 40 Reactive Metals -> 5 Mechanical Parts
Planet 6 (Gas) ## STARVED ## * 4599/hr: 6000 Aqueous Liquids -> 40 Water * 6116/hr: 6000 Ionic Solutions -> 40 Electrolytes * 40 Water + 40 Electrolytes -> 5 Coolant
Planet 8 (Gas) ## STARVED ## * 10244/hr: 12000 Noble Gas -> 80 Oxygen

W-space planets are comparable to nullsec in terms of mineral wealth. They're certainly better than most low-sec worlds you'll find.
As for risk, many wormhole corporations tend to operate principally out of w-space anyways. Since we do sleeper sites, gas harvesting, t3 production, etc., managing the local planets doesn't add significantly to our overall risk assessment.
I wouldn't move into a wormhole if all you sought was better planets for PI. But if you're considering w-space life already, the rich planets of the frontier are a nice bonus.

This, although I'll note that I've seen an increase of people trying to setup safes and GSCs and what not to ninja planet goods in inhabited systems - I'd like to personally thank the caldari hauler pilot I killed last night for all the advanced control centers that dropped from his ship.

I'm living in a C1 WH right now and have 9 planets (2 Barren, 2 Lava, 4 Gas, 1 Ice) and am making all of the trade goods POS fuel right now on one each of Barren, Lava, and Gas. I took down the resource densities for each of the materials on my planets and it's amost 60% (58.3778), which is great compared to the 20% or so that some friends in highsec were reporting. Of all 45 minerals in there (9 planets, 5 each) there is only one that's below 30% (and there's 48% of the same stuff at another planet).
