I'd like to bring the idea back up for consideration by the devs..I woud like to propose to CCP that the hundred million or so dead/dormant trial accounts that have never been activated since trial end from the last 7 years be deleted and the names contained therin released for new players/characters. Namespace and server space will be released...the whole EvE community has known for years....we NEED names!!!
CCP can simply send an email giving them notice (like the emails we all get inviting us back after 6 months of not playing) and then terminating the accounts after the given time. My proposal is for dormant TRIAL accounts only. If a player has activated then in all fairness they should be able to keep name and character for any future use.
Thoughts?.

I got a better Idea that CCP might like that wont totally **** off ppl who log in after 3-7 years of in-activeness to find no characters on their account. In most mmo's when characters are merged to a new server free character name changes are given to players who's names would be taken. Why don't we just apply a similar concept and simply clear inactive character names and give them random generated serial numbers. Once the person starts his account again upon logging in will be notified that player has lost his name and must rename his character before logging in. Simple. Lets not go around deleting ppls ****. |

Wanna point out the emotionally disturbed people that get hacked off logging into a game they never subscribed to 3-7 years later, finding that their FREE TRIAL chars are missing? IMO: Send them for some mental counseling or a refill on their prescriptions.
The OP isn't talking about paid accounts, only purging trial accounts that never subscribed - only several year old trial accounts at that. This has spank to do with something anyone has paid for. |

This is a good idea though it seems to me that with the allowance of last names, that people really shouldn't have that hard of a time coming up with a name.
But it does seem like a good idea to delete the old trial accounts. http://amarrian.blogspot.com/ -á~ Roleplay blog.http://sovereigntywars.wordpress.com/ ~ Faction War blog. |

I agree completely with this (even though I've never had issues with unavailable names). Only so long as the activated accounts aren't even TOUCHED. I've been inactive for 1-2 year increments during my time as an EVE player, and having my account deleted, or even having to rename my player, would NOT make me happy.

This I agree with.
I'd like to say this. I've introduced a lot of people to the game, and not one of them has ever used a reactivated trial account to do it. There are a few reasons for this.
People usually don't remember the login credentials for a 4 year old account.
Steam often has $5 eve sales, but these only cover new accounts, not existing ones, including trials.
The buddy system only works for new accounts, not existing ones, including trials.
Basically, theres zero incentive for people to use an old account.
Also, I know that new players don't really understand this, but two weeks is not a lot of training time. If they have to retrain it, they'll deal with it somehow, poor muffins.
So ya, if you've paid for an account, that should reserve your name and account indefinitely. But all abandoned trials more then a year old should be deleted. |

+1 providing it's never-paid trials only. (I realise the OP said this, but some people *cough* el alasar *cough* have suggested taking out inactive paid accounts too. This should not happen.) I've never personally had an issue with name conflicts, but this would free up a lot of names, and probably also take some load off the server. Though I think that would never happen as that would drastically reduce the number of accounts EvE Online can claim to have.

Dormant paid accounts too.
What right do you think you are 'owed' if you paid 14 dollars for 1 month and then didnt play for 7 years?
If you do not pay for your car lease, it gets repo'd If you do not pay for your house mortgage, the bank takes it back If you do not pay rent, you get thrown out.
Only in eve you pay nothing - you still 'own it'.
Put in a 6 month to a 1 year dormant state clause, if that hapens your player gets COPIED to a backup server. If you come back - you pick a new name if your old one is taken and life goes on.
When an account goes dormant the player is forced into an npc corp as well.
There is no way for a corp to know currently if a player is 'active' or not.
If I didnt pay for 1 year - i would fully expect to 'lose something', and with my above suggestion, I do not lose my 'skill time' i have put in the game, I just lose my magical name that I seem somehow so attached to a digital character.

Its not about whats owed or not owed, and its not about revenge for not subscribing longer, its about ensuring we don't end up in a shallow name pool.
The vast majority of names are held on trial accounts. Deleting trial accounts is unarguably fair, and will release 75% of the names, at least. The only benefit to deleting paid accounts is that it will release specific names people might want.
In exchange, it makes the chance of those people resubscribing almost zero. Think about it, if you played for a while, decided eve needed growing time and left it for two years, came back and discovered that your name had been taken from you, would you feel charitable toward the publisher?
Of course not. So from that standpoint, trial account is all that's neccisary.
And its $21 to subscribe for the first time. |

CCP makes a big deal out of reputation in Eve. For that reason, I don't think past subscribers should lose their names. There might be some previously-notorious names in that last that haven't played in years, but their names should forever be associated with their characters.
Of course, wiping out characters would wreck things like killboards that rely on being able to look up character names. |

Trial accounts that haven't been activated after a month after their trial expired should be purged automatically. A trial is there for you to see whether you like the game or not, not to reserve yourself a character name in case you decide to play it three years from now.
I am not sure about paid accounts which went inactive a long time ago. I would like a solution where you keep your name unless someone else actually creates another character with the same name. When that happens, you get renamed to Caldari Citizen 1234567, and get a free character rename ticket. Either way, there definitely needs to be a long timer on it, a year, maybe two after your account went inactive. |

I'm not so sure about messing with account that have paid at one time or another. As someone else mentioned, names and reputations mean a lot in Eve.

I agree with purging inactive trial accounts that have been inactive for a large amount of time.
these accounts are, generally, people who tried the game, and decided, for whatever reason, that they were not interested in continuing, i have also heard of people who decided that they had used too much of their trial time training the wrong skills and made another trial to start over.
clearing out the abandoned accounts will free up server space and a lot of names.
