Hello everyone- I was jet can mining in a high sec. system (.9) earlier today. I left my container and headed back to my home station to swap out to my industrial ship. I returned (elapsed time about 2 minutes) to my container to find that it now belonged to someone else.
So that's my question. How does that happen? I'm not at all upset that it did happen, I would just like to understand how it was able to happen.
Also, assuming I now go in and "take" the contents of the container, how long will Joe Blow and his corp. mates be able to blow me out of the sky without risking Concord intervention?
Thanks for your help, guys.

Edited by: Alexi Blue on 11/06/2010 20:51:22 Anyone can steal your container and put your stuff in their container - thus, if you take 'your' items back they can shoot you. It's a popular tactics used in high-sec.
For a period of time you can also shoot the guy who stole your things in the first place, however you will most likely get blown up in the process.
Edit: The timer is minimum 15 minutes. ---

Edited by: Kal''Reeger on 11/06/2010 21:16:30 That....that actually makes a lot of sense. I think I had just assumed that it was my container as it was in the exact same spot that I left it in. But, transferring the contents over to another container makes a lot of sense. Thanks.
Any idea how long one would be aggressive towards the other player and his corp. mates?

It's minimum of 15 minutes. Here you can read more about the criminal flagging mechanics. ---

A quick note on the mechanics of it if you were interested: Although combat ships do not have the cargo capacity to take the ore, you can still move it from one container to another. The "can flipper", as it is known, will eject something worthless from their ship (to create a jet can) and then drag and drop your ore from your can into theirs. If you do not take the bait they will likely just shoot their can and destroy the ore.

Thanks for the link, Alexi. That was exactly what I was looking for.
Interesting information, Case. So, would I be able to do the same without also having to worry about the repercussions or would I still be marked for death as it were?

The Act of "stealing" from a can in this way works both ways:
If you take stuff from another player's can you will be flagged to them for 15 minutes.
Best solutions? - Don't use jetcans for mining, skill up so you can get in a Hulk or other large mining vessel, fit it with cargo expanders (assuming you're a hisec miner here) and just dock with your ore every so often.
Or: Join a Corp/fleet with a trusted friend so you can have someone sitting in an indy to pick up the ore you jettison before the can flippers get near it. ===================================== It smells of spoon! ===================================== |

It depends on what you mean by that.
The guy that stole your stuff is flagged to you for 15 minutes. That means that you can attack him for stealing your ore and blow him up if you are able to without worrying about Concord. The thing is - he wouldn't be out can flipping if he wasn't looking for a fight. That and these guys like to pick on newer people - they aren't looking for a fair fight, they're looking for an easy kill. If they were looking for a fair fight they wouldn't be can flipping new people.
Now you can take your ore back - but if you do that - then YOU will be flagged to him the same way he was flagged to you - and then HE can attack you without fear of Concord retaliation - worrying only about your ability to defend yourself.
Here - if you want a lessen in PVP - you can take the guy on. Just do that in a cheap ship you can afford to lose - as you probably will.
Now - as to Jet Can Mining.
Jet Can Mining is relatively safe if you do it certain ways.
1) You want to do it in a quiet system. Essentially one with just a few other players in it.
2) You can also mine mission space. Here - they have to scan you down to attack you. They can do it - but most of the people who do that - are in busy systems with lots of victims. Mostly - they are looking for mission runners so they can ninja their salvage. People who are just cruising the belts looking for someone with a jet can aren't going to be a problem.
So - if you mine in mission space, in a quiet system - you've little to worry about.
1) Get a mission. 2) Run the mission. 3) Loot and Salvage the Wrecks. 4) Come back with your miner and mine into a jet can (label it with the time - they last 2 hours) and bookmark it. 5) When you are done, one way or the other, turn the mission in - and then warp to your book marked jet can with your industrial.
If you have more than one character - as long as someone stays in the mission space - you can turn the mission in and get the time bonus without the mission space going away. If no one is in the mission space and you turn the mission in - the mission space and its asteroids go away. Any wrecks or jet cans you leave there will still be there for two hours though so as long as you have bookmarked at least one of them - you can warp back to that book mark.
One thing I tend to do when running missions is run several and turn them all in then get in my salvager destroyer and run around to all my book marks and then salvage/loot the wrecks. Just keep an eye on the time so they don't go away.
