I purchased my first motorised transport ever today. Just a little scooter, but should be fun!
Two stroke engines definitely create a distinctive smell, and a cloud in your wake. I'm looking forwards to it, but I found trying to tax the thing a pain. It is currently in for a MOT test, and the Post Office told me I need the certificate of insurance (in the post) and the MOT certificate. It's a bit of a catch 22 situation, in that when I get the MOT certificate, I'll have the bike - but untaxed, and no way of moving it without riding it. The first time I have known the government to not want my money.

my dirty mind was NOT thinking about motorscooters when i read the title

My first motorised transport was a Honda 49cc moped. It was great at the time, when i was at uni. But one night taking a bend to fast i flipped it breaking my collar bone. I did'nt actually go to A&E until 6 days later even though it was agony moving the right arm in a certain way. I told the nurse how i did it and she said 'naaah you did it playing rugby'. Nurses have a dark sense of humour. .................................................. Cylon cultural victor! |

You are allowed to ride it on the road with no tax or mot IF the bike is booked into a registered mot station for the purpose of an mot test.
this is the only time you can ride it on the road.
i believe you must still have valid insurance. Your insurance will cover you if it is purely for the purpose of getting the bike tested and will cover you to and from the test centre but the bike MUST be booked in for a prearranged test.

Yes, well, the UK anyways.
MoT is a certificate that the vehicle is roadworthy - that all the relevant safety devices - lights, brakes etc, work sufficiently, that things like steering and suspension are in good enough condition that the driver should be able to maintain control, that sort of thing.
Road tax is an annual payment to the Government, ostensibly to maintain and improve the road network. It is also a legal thing, to do with ownership of the vehicle, and evidence of the vehicle being insured and roadworthy. You get a road tax disc to display on the vehicle. Vehicles without road tax discs tend to attract the attention of policemen who will lie in wait, ready to truncheon people for driving unsafe vehicles.
Also, 2-stroke? o.0 Aren't those pretty old-school by now?

I'll never trust a nation that taxes your televisions. There is a line, and taxing the idiot box is on the other side of it.
Everything except the road tax thing is the same in Canada, you have to prove with a mechanics report that the vehicle is safe (if its older then 10 years). Short of that they pay for road upkeep through normal taxation routes.

Yes, just about every country in Europe has the tv tax, and it's total bull****, but people in the US shouldn't be so shocked. You pay for basic cable in the US as well, it's just looked at as a "service" instead of a tax. The tax on the tv is like $100 per year, which is about the same for basic cable.
Every single government in the world is going to find a way to **** its citizens, whether through propaganda or taxes. Sure, the cable company in the US provides the service you pay for basic cable, and then they're taxed heavily in the US. The more you travel the world, the more you see how everyone is exactly the same.

Not having road tax in the UK isnt actually a matter for the Police, all they actually do is report you to the DVLA who then take the matter on and deal with the legalities of it all.
Youll notice when a cop pulls you for tax trouble, his mate will go entirely around your car looking for flaws. Thats the only way they can get themselves a tick against the work related pay thang.
True factoid there. *This is the end, my friend* |

Edited by: Pir''oko on 13/06/2010 16:59:33 Edited by: Pir''oko on 13/06/2010 16:58:19 There is nothing quite like a two-stroke.
I own a 1000cc Honda Firestorm, 636cc Kwaka Ninja, a pair of sidecars and three Honda NC30's that I race. Plus a handful of other two-wheeled detritus that litters the garage (dirtbikes and such). On top of this, I have either owned or ridden just about every mainstream bike made in the last 10-15 years.
Easily, the scariest (and most fun) bike of all that I own is a 350cc two-smoker, the absolute peak of 1978 technology. Far too much power for the lackadaisical brakes and suspension that is fitted.
And that smell in the morning, as you garage and shortly thereafter the road outside fills with that blue-gray haze...
Mmmmmm...
It is the smell of a thousand Prius owning hippies suddenly having their life work negated.
And that, my friends, is a good smell.
