Hello,
I have already trained the following relevent skills for hulk piloting:
Industry V Astrogeo IV mining IV Mining Barge III
(and the other sepcific requirements, i forget)
At this point, would I be best spending 6 days training all my learning skills to IV before continuing with Mining barge training?
Eve mon suggested that I should train my learning skills)
Also, any other advice you would like to give a propsective Hulk Miner?,
Many Thanks,
C Linski

with my trading guy, going to hulk takes 124 days.
If I take evemons learning skill suggestions, it shortens the total time by about 50 days.
Now do you think it is worth it?
If learning skills won't shorten the time...it doesn't suggest them.
Also remember that flying a Hulk and flying a Hulk well are different. Flying it well adds more days bringing me to 232 days before learning skills. Taking the suggested learning skills would reduce this time by 103 days.
So in short training them all to IV worth it...maybe...train the ones evemon tells you to only, and only as high as it suggests for shortest time to goal. Training all to IV is good but the ones for charisma won't affect hulk so would be at this point training that could be put off till later.

Well ... there are a number of ways of looking at this.
Different people have different priorities ...
What I do ...
Is to train my Learning Skills to 5/4 (Rank 1/Rank 3) right off the bat - then I've gotten that over with and out of the way. I will then receive the benefits of those levels the entire rest of the time I use that character.
*shrug*
Of course ... at this point ... I'm training alts.
If you're training your first character then you should train a few skills to make some money with - then start training your learning skills. Here, 4/3 might be a good level for a while. Of course - that involves getting the money to buy your Rank 3 skills which are about 4.5 mil apiece.
You really do want at least 4/3 though as soon as you can get it. That will really cut down on your learning time for every thing else.
Don't forget some implants too.
Training order.
All the Rank 1 skills have Memory and Intelligence as their primary and secondary attributes - so - it pays to train Memory and Intelligence first - that way all the other Rank 1 Skills train faster.
If you do this while you're under the double speed training (below 1.6 mil SP) - that really speeds this up and gets your learning skill training out of the way as fast as possible.
Now ... one thing I've also taken to doing, was when I got the message that some learning skill I was going to spend a few days training was going to go over the 1.6 mil limit - and hence would NOT itself be trained at double speed - was to go ahead and purchase what ever other skills I'd been wanting and get those started so that they were trained at double speed.
So, for a first time character the routine is like this:
1) Train enough practical skills to make money with, generally including Faction Frigate III and Faction Industrial III.
2) Train your Rank 1 and 3 learning skills up until you get the message that one of them is going to go over the top - then remove that skill from the learning queue.
3) Train a bunch of skills you wanted to get to so that you are taking full advantage of the 1.6 cap on double speed training.
4) Go back to training the rest of your learning skills to either 4/3 or 5/4.
5) Go on with training your character in their profession.
Now remember - don't fly a hollow ship. You can't just get the bare skills to fly the thing and then do well with it. You need your Electronics, Engineering, Navigation, Mechanic, Social and Science skills trained up too as well as your weapons skills.
The Social skills will get you more money for the same mission and get you better missions faster. So if you're going to run missions at all - they are well worth having - and a reason not to neglect training your Charisma attribute skills.
Also consider your trade skills - specifically Broker Relations and Accounting.
EVE has lots of little fees that just eat away at everything you do. Getting your standings up by running missions for the NPC corporations owning the bases you use and those trade skills can cut down on that whittling away business.
The whole thing with EVE is - you get all these little things that by themselves don't amount to much - but when you add them all up - make a difference. 5% or 10% here or there doesn't matter so much - but a bunch of those five or ten percents added together can become 50% or more - and that does make a difference. So be aware that this is how this game works.
Now - as to using tools. Understand what the tool is doing. If you ask a tool to do something specific - it will give you an answer to that question. It will not necessarily point out the value of a more generalized approach - such as having all your learning and support skills trained up early. These skills will serve you throughout your game career. You can do other things and these skills will all still be there regardless of which ships you fly or what profession you pursue.
That said - don't turn it into a grind and then quit.

Slightly different tack:
Mining returns are dropping at the moment from an already not very impressive start (assuming that you're going to be mining in high sec).
Are you sure that you want to invest a lot of time training for something that isn't very interesting and doesn't earn you much? I trained my first alt up as a miner and now I barely mine with him at all...

Also, on that Hulk, you're going to NEED drones. Light combat drones are your basic rat-repellent. (Don't try to fight off other players in a Hulk, no matter the provocation) Mining drones can increase your ore yield.
Drones 5 (so one can use 5 drones at a time) Mining Drones (train to 5 for Tech 2) Scout Drone Operation 5 (prereq for T2 combat drones and helpful to have) Drone Interfacing 5 (20% more damage output per level trained)
I say "drones eat everything" (eventually) One of me corpies says "Drones are love" Either way, your barge/exhumer will NEED those fricken drones. _______________________________

Drones have no real priority if you mine in 0.9 or 1.0, although they must be trained sooner or later (I agree with that). Mining drones are also not a necessity. They don't have that much added value imo, compared with what the Hulk's 3 strip miners yield. And people tend to forget them

Thank you everyone for all the help & advice
I have decided to train upto retriever level, then follow eve mon by upping my specific learning skills, and then continue with training my mining barge.
This will also still be within my 1.6M limit for bonus which is also some great news.
and can mine in my retriever while i train also.
thanks everyone again for the advice,

Very much what Celia said!
My main is maxed out Hulk, and after returning from wormhole to highsec i can tell you that you do better any profession than high sec mining.
As mineral prices took a nose dive with Tyrannis (and they keep falling) as long as you don¦t plan moving 0.0 (and joining a corp there) or going to Wormhole (where you have to spam directional every 15 seconds) atm it¦s not worth.
Anyway, skilling for a hulk will need some time and who knows what will happen to mineral prices in 3-5 months.
You can read some Akita T¦s elaborations about that in "sience&industry" and make up your mind.

Thats my thinking, regardless of current mineral prices, training for hulk seems like a good investment.
and there is always the chance that eventually, the mineral prices will rise again. and who knows, maybe with the loss of interest in mining, the prices will go up because of the demand for miners? the market's are a crazy thing.
