Is there a simple way of Grabbing a Character ID based on the Character Name only? Or is an API Key the only way?

Afaik you need the characterID, but NOT the API key for that character. You can get characterIDs from your own api, like in wallet transactions, killmails, contact list, eve mails, etc. You can even add contacts from EVE Gate, retrieve ID and erase.
Why would you want the portrait of people unrelated to you? (No relation = no id from the api).
Edit: If all you want is a few portraits you can search the character by name on EVE Gate and copy the image.
Edit2: Actually, you can get the characterID by looking at the name of the picture retrieved from EVE Gate.

I was just wanting a simple way to grab my users character portraits without having to ask for API information. I already know I need the character ID, I was trying to ask if there was a way to get the Character ID by entering the Characters name.
Pretty much I want the user to be able to enter their characters name and then have my script convert the name to the character ID and then pull the image. Sorry If I was unclear the first time.

I wonder if that bit of a crawl will be penalized by ccp (see my previous edits). So fill a courtesy (courtesy because they have not yet updated their terms of service afaik) petition to see if it's okay and get it from EVE Gate.

This is probably the best method, you can even specify multiple names, separated by commas.
