I've got a serious problem with the fact that when the ships are listed on the left and right side of the screen that the commentators appear not to be looking at the same feed we are. They're running off ships one at a time, and sometimes reading off ships off for one side that are really on the other side.
It's frustrating, and really one of the only complaints I've got. I just wish that when they were reading off the ships theyd just read them how theyre listed on the feed, and not off their overviews... |

If you can come up with a way for human beings to say more than one word in the same instant, let me know. Until then, I believe commentators will still have to fall back on the inefficient method of mentioning ships one at a time.
As regards your second issue, that they were listing ships for the wrong side, I have not heard this occur. Document or go away.
I shall end this by employing a prototype method of using words simultaneously by encapsulating a 750 word essay entirely devoted to insulting you into one word.

This issue should go away when we are all at ccp this weekend and can see the feed without a delay. It takes packets time to travel around the world and if we tried to use the delayed feed for anything from our homes you'd likely have a lot more to complain about. |

Not really sure you read the thread AND comprehended it. Darius seems to get my point. Im pointing more at that fact that:
Team A fields 3x Tengu, 2x Rook, 1 Basilisk, and 2x Kitsunes
Announcer reads it off as "Tengu, Rook, Tengu, Kitsune, Basilisk, Rook, Kitsune, Tengu"
you mean to tell me thats not largely inefficient? If we're seeing the lineup on our screens, with what each team is fielding, how come they arent? It seems like theyre reading the ship types out of space in no particular order.
With regards to the second issue, it's happened mostly when Kil2 is announcing, and with that Brianna chick...I dont remember which video it's happened in, sorry i didnt bust out my notepad and pen to document this for you.
by the way, hull tank a navy mega about it... |

How it works: Commentator -> Feed -> You
How you think it should work: Feed -> You/Commentator -> Feed -> You
As far as I'm aware, the commentators are just using the Eve Client to commentate with. This means they're using the same overview you have and the same target locking system you have. Are they able to lock to 20 targets at once? This would be why it's so difficult for them and you guys SERIOUSLY need them to cut them some slack.

For the first two weekends the commentators have had to order the ships themselves. If the matches run close together (such as when people hold fire to loot) then they don't get much time to setup or get a drink etc before Soundwave starts asking questions.
During AT7 I found out (from the YouTube replays) that whilst I had my screen ordered by points that the cameras had sorted T3 above faction battleships so my ordering was off. As I've mentioned previously, if the commentator reads a list of ships like a bad recon report then it is very likely they didn't get setup before the match. Correctly setup you'll hear "3 tengus and a basilisk" instead of "tengu, basilisk, tengu and another tengu". It really doesn't bother me that much for the qualifiers though.
There are multiple delays involved as it is and trying to pre-stream the matches to the commentators wouldn't work too well. Also the commentators want to be able to use overviews and other things not on the stream to give more background on what is going on.
Delays wise you already have to deal with
- Eve Client -> Commentator
- Eve Voice from commentator -> CCP
- Mixing the camera feed + audio feed and encoding
- Pushing the stream to the distribution servers
- Viewer streaming and decoding it
There is around a 15 second delay (so I was told) between something happening in game until when the majority of viewers see it. It isn't a realistic option to commentate with such a delay so we have the current system which we can live with. Of course the best option would be to have the commentary team on site the whole time, but that would likely require a change of tourney format (I can't see CCP wanting to put 5 experts up in a hotel for 2.5 weeks ).
This weekend, assuming a similar setup to AT7, the lead commentator will get a camera on grid and the other commentator will have a screen showing the exact camera feed about to go out so all will be well

Why didn't you commentate this year? Liked you in AT7

What I do have heard multiple times in the few battles I watched is that they often mistake the ship being blown to pieces. They say Hurricane when actually it was a Sleipnir that blew up etc. Also, they are often late in spotting primaries or totally miss ships disappearing from the list.
Other than that (which probably has a valid reason), props to you :)

Only CCP can answer that one for sure, but I did apply
With the high number of applications this time I didn't expect them to change from the two returning and three new commentator format. Of course I was gutted not to get picked, but I can't blame CCP for wanting the most experienced returning commentators and currently those are Kil2 and Verone.
Of course being on the CSM might have counted against me or simply they might think I wasn't good enough last time

There is certainly lots to look at with up to 20 ships and up to 100 drones! Sometimes you'll be talking about the team on the left side when from the corner of your eye you'll see a ship vanish on the right. At that point you can have a "moment" and forget what ship was there. I ended up screenshoting the starting lineup and displaying it on a second screen so I could tell for sure.
Mostly (as you can see from the improvement this week) it takes practice and just as people hit their stride the tourney ends

I could just say "I like you CCP should bring you in etc" but people bash me and tell me I'm a suck up when I'm nice without a explanation so here is one.
You come from a cool place in eve, agony, teaching noobs how to PvP. I watched AT7 with a friend who has since started to play EvE. I blame you, since your way of explaining things was very clearly understandable for beginners or players who are not playing yet. This was a good thing imo. They others sure try but you just simply do it better.
Also it's not like you don't know your pvp, you did that part good as well. You lacked a bit in speed sometimes but you made up for that in that whatever you said was nearly always accurate.
CCP made a bad choice, hope the fix it next year!

Bit too late for this I guess but...
If available, pop up the feed on a second screen. While delayed it might still let you spot errors and stuff you might be missing.

Edited by: bestsnail on 16/06/2010 10:38:28 There was one match on youtube where the commentators were saying stuff that happened like 20 seconds ago during the video. It was pretty funny, but yea the live feed would be exactly like THAT.
oh yea edit wtf is darius on some kinda posting parole just for the tournament??

I have been reading the threads about the commentary of ATVIII with mixed interest and wondered why folks are so quick to criticise...
Then I went back and watched most of ATVII on the CCP you tube channel.
The difference is chalk and cheese!
The commentary last year was extremely good - ATVIII is woeful in comparison.
So please, any of you commentators for the current tourney, Log into the CCP channel of youtune and watch a few of last years matches.... then look at the rounds you have commentated on and see the difference!
the commentators of ATVII KNEW what they were talking about! Their commentary gave a lot of incite about what certain ship types and fleet combinations were capable of - This year the commentary team appears to be reacting to damage n the field 30 seconds to 1 minute behind the live action (yes, we can also se what ships are in deep armor or structure).
Before the preliminary finals start, go watch last years tourney, LEARN about what ships and fleets can do, and up your game!
Right now you are reactive instead of proactive with the majority of experienced tournament watchers criticizing every comment you make. Learn from it, get some knowledge, and be more inciteful on the air...Even if you make a bad call - make it loud and learn from it :) The current, late, lazy commentary is laughable

(FYI, as a past radio DJ I will be applying to be a commentator for the next tourney myself)

So u think after u bash down your fellow game mates, CCP will choose you to be a commentator next year... good luck with that.
The commentators this year are doing a great job. The two that returned are as good as they have been in the past. And the new ones I believe are doing great for their first time. And I have a belief if they came back again next year they would be even better.
Normally people don't talk to/for 30k plus people at a given time. Plus thousands more who will review their work on Youtube in the coming weeks and months.
My hat is off to all commentators of AT8!
