Anyone else finding these to be too tight on powergrid? I use the same setup for most of my planets and it works fine on every type of planet except gas. Keeps running out of powergrid.

Edited by: NacNudcs on 15/06/2010 10:51:59 Edited by: NacNudcs on 15/06/2010 10:51:37 Gas Giant's are larger planets, ie they have a bigger diameter than most other planets. This causes your links to be longer and cost more CPU/Power even though they look like the same length as other planets. IE, one inch on your screen on a Gas giant might be a three times (or whatever) as long a distance for a the link to cover as a different planet.
The icons are scaled to look the same size, despite the larger planet size though, so it's not immediately obvious.

Edited by: Dances WithWolves on 15/06/2010 11:04:17 Ok cool I get bigger planet bigger cost on pg for links etc but shouldn't there then be a bonus to gas planets? If they use up more powergrid, nerfing how much and what you can put on the plant, before you have even dropped anything? Like higher abundance of products per cycle?
Looks like im better off with a storm planet, can harvest more and use less powergrid.

Bonus for Gas Giants is the massive amount of them, so you almost always get your very own high density deposit. Just be careful you don't get one of the super-massive 100k+ km diameter ones. Show info is your friend, also on other planets, those can go from some 1.5k km to 10k km diameter. -------- All I want is a better mankind.

The Gas Planets and Storm Planets are HUGE! Atm I 4 harvester planets, of which two of them have links between the different fields. The gas and storm planets cannot support this because of how big they are. Visibly the fields the same distance but physically they are over 6 times further apart than lets say the Lava planet.
IMHO they need to reduce the MW and CPU usage for the Links on Gas and Storm planets.

Why? This is another thing that creates diversity and friction in the market / economy. If the economics of PI were completely homogenous then there'd be very little point in doing it. I like that there's something different about Gas Giants and that checking the planet's diameter is a "trick" to use in determining the most efficient setup...

Exactly! It would be pretty craptastic of every planet was the same size etc. CCP always taked about the difficulties about extracting items from Gas and other hostile enviroment planets. This is just one of those difficulties.

Whilst i dont think they should change the size of gas planets, i do think they should remove the normalisation of the pin sizes.
Its more logical (to me at least) to see the planet as bigger/pins smaller. This way, the minimum distance between pins should be the same regardless of the planet size. Then at least you still pay the higher grid costs for making longer links, but currently its impossible to make short links on large planets. War is not about dying for your faction, its about making the enemy die for theirs. |

Which gives the planets their own, unique flavor. I'd be in favor of MORE of this not less. What if you couldn't link over water on a temperate planet? Or if Veldspar couldn't be mined within 5000 meters? Having the planets be different and avoiding a one size fits all approach is both flavorful and skill testing which is what the industrial side needs more of.

Our corp is addressing the problem by having a number of people working together on P/I. Our solution to the gas planet "problem": -- Always check the radius/diameter -- Only if all else fails set up on a monster -- Set up a strip mine for the one P1 product you most want, on THE hottest "hot spot". -- The strip mine feeds an off-world production chain run operated by other corp members. -- Death and taxes are replaced by Diameter and Taxes.
I'm strip mining Reactive Gas in w-space using an Advanced CC, Planetology & Adv. Planetology both to IV. Nailed a AMAZING hot spot and am feeding seven factories producing Oxidizing Compound. Requires only 12 extractors on a 23-hour cycle after running 3 on short cycles to prime the LP. Extractors placed as close as possible to each other over the hot spot. LP and BIFs placed as close to extractor field as possible also.

Edited by: Morikai Acler on 15/06/2010 22:08:40 Basically with Gas (giant) planets you gotta zoom all the way in, as close as possible to what you're going for to minimize your link distance. And with most gas planets depending on position it's likely only going to be possible to get 1 maybe 2 p1 substances out of em before your grid maxes. My other suggestion is, use Storage facilities to cut down on the number of links on planet, as well as making them as short as possible. The other advantage is this allows you to put all extractors on a 5 hour cycle. The storage will stockpile extra stuff while continually feeding your processors on a two way route. Works pretty good for me feeding two processor plants with 4 extractors on a deep red/whitish noble metals spot. That'll also keep the processors running long after the load runs out, so if you're not on game all the time you can more or less run it at your own pace.

The best solution that I have found for dealing with gas giants is instead of trying to connect two different hot-spots, you build two separate launch pads near whatever hot spots you may have. Since LP's and storage units cost the same pg, (cpu is generally never an issue on an extraction planet) you can save 1000's of pg vs. trying to string your hot spots together. Now, to get your goods from one hot spot to your processors just use one LP to export your goods, and import with the other one. I'm using this very effectively to make coolant on a small (18,000km) gas giant, and I generally only have to import/export once every 2-3 days.
