i read that in fall or possible winter 2010 we will get to make new avatars. i think this is cool and all but ive had this avatar for 7 years im kind of attached to it. it took me hours to get it just the way i liked it.
my question is will the new avatar engine have a port over ability where you can take your current avatar data and then tweak it from there?

In the past CCP has said they are looking into a possible tool to import but it is very unlikely (not gonna happen). Expect to have to remake your avatar all over again.

To be completely honest, I bet the new avatars will have ridiculous amounts of options compared to our current. Basically, just keep a screen shot of your current avatar and I bet you'll be able to remake it to look exactly the same if you really tried.

Lets hope.
With the current customization options we all pretty much look like the same people, just with different hair and clothes. All the sliders give the illusion of full control but there's no way to escape the generic look of each race.

Like saying every black person looks the same. Lil'Wayne and Bill Cosby don't look very much alike aside from their skin color.

It all has to do with Incarna and apparently EVE's current portrait system won't be any longer inter-compatible between each other, so at some point it was mentioned that all players will get a mandatory make-over for the character portraits.
I find it puzzling as I always thought the portrait you created is only pure 3D at creation - after it is a static image (or so I think)... but yes, come Incarna, and we will get facelifts. All of us.

I'm afraid I read a dev saying somewhere (blog?) that the new engine in no way will be able to convert the old image to a new image. So all avatars will be lost and will have to be redone. It won't be an option, it'll have to be done.

The pictures CCP was touring around on the alliance tourny day were far more realistic then those currently available. The guy said they were going to move away from the more cartoony look of the current portraits. I seriously doubt that you'd find it very difficult to make an approximate copy of your current portrait given the amounts of tools companies are including with their character creators these days. -Jin Nib Trading on behalf of Opera Noir since: 2009.03.02 03:53:00

In another world where game developers do things that make sense that would be the case. In our world, not so much. There used to be a bug that would make your character's head turn in random directions and your portrait would get stuck looking at the ceiling or something. It happened to me once. The portraits are very much still 3D since their heads can still be turned by bugs even months after character creation.

Does that mean Gallente will stop wearing bad abstract sculptures as hats?

Otherwise this could never have happened. Poor guy. I still hear him cry sometimes at night.

It'd be cool if you could change bits of your avatar, like say the hair or make up / tattoos, whenever you wanted.

I think they will allow a lot more, since plastic surgery is already common IRL. It isn't much of a strech to assume, that altering facial features could be a commonplace service for the wealthy in the distant future. It is also a service other players could easily provide for you for a modest ammount of ISK.

Well, at least in the 2008 fanfest video the presenter could change clothes, hairdos and whatnot rather easily. Of course he was using GM tools though, but looking at that, this feature shouldn't be impossible.

Hookers & pimps. I bet that's how vast majority of avatars will look like in Incarna.
