I must have missed something when it comes to how extractors work.
Given the drain on power and CPU increases with the length of links, why would I not pack my extractors and processors close together? What if any advantage is there to spreading them out? if too closely packed will they exhaust the "resource node" quicker?
Also .. it was recommended that I rout the out put of the extractors to a storage facility or the command centers storage not directly to the processors. Then make a route from the storage/command center to the processors. How exactly do I implement that? If I have say five extractors and I check the command center it will show 5 incoming raw material streams. Do I then need to route each of those five incoming streams to the processor or by making a single link will the processor then just fetch raw ingredients from the command centers storage as needed? Is there a standard ratio between number of processors needed to keep up with a set number of extractors?

Edited by: Droxlyn on 22/06/2010 00:44:36 I've found little reason to make extraction colonies that do not look like this: http://www.imarvintpa.com/Imagery/v/IMarvinTPA/Eve/PerfectExtractor.jpg.html
I haven't noticed any significant decrease during normal use at 23h runs with no other competing colonies on the hotspot.

In not so many words, basically, yes. But it would depend on the actual planet, number of extractors, and either cycles selected or total resources extracted (pretty much the same thing theoretically, but there could be some extra waste).

The CC buffer is quite small (500 m^3). A storage facility is better (5k m^3). A spaceport ("launchpad") is even better (10k m^3) and has the advantage of cheap and massive lift capability (which might want to use for the stuff you process instead multiple CC rocket launches). You only need to (re)route one of them, it automatically transfers as much as possible (if processor buffer has any space left), when available in storage.

No, it depends on extraction rate. One basic processor "eats up" 3000 raw materials every 30 minutes, if available (that's 144k per day). As long as you can extract about that much on average per basic processor, it's all good.

Thanks I appreciate the quick on topic helpful replies.
I guess the next steps are- studying the market and seeing what sells tweaking the production effciency deciding if I want to do more than just simple level 1 processing

It is entirely possible to place 1 spaceport with 20 basic processors and/or extractors on a planet with an advanced CC. The key is making sure all of your links only cost 15 PG/each. Total of 22 buildings on the planet.
I have several planets where 15-18 extractors are feeding a few basic processors (depending on extraction rates) and then I export the P1 product to a production planet. Normally the more rare item is harvested like this and shipped to the more prolific component's harvesting spot.

just for laughs: remember not to believe everything you find in a wiki
I just ran across this:

at http://www.eve-ivy.com/wiki/index.php?title=Colony_Management
If you place your processors like that, you won't have much joy with your installation...
That is about the most ridiculously gimped setup I've ever seen. Their reasoning to put extractors for 4 different resources right next to each other in several different locations sounds plausible enough if you don't know how resources work.
Maybe he just put that up to reduce competition
